Our client is seeking an experienced Assistant Director to join the WHS Framework section of the Legal and Framework Policy Branch.
This leadership role offers the opportunity to contribute to the development and oversight of national workplace health and safety (WHS) policy, with a focus on the model WHS Act and its application in an evolving work environment.

As the Assistant Director, you will play a central role in driving the development and reform of the model WHS Act.
You will manage a team of policy experts, ensuring the delivery of high-quality legislative reforms and national policies.
Key duties include:
Driving legislative reform: Leading initiatives for reforming the model WHS Act to keep pace with changing workplace environments.
Policy development and guidance: Creating policy, guidance materials, reports, and processes on a range of WHS topics, including emerging issues such as the gig economy and the use of artificial intelligence in workplaces.
Document preparation: Preparing high-quality briefs, speeches, and policy papers for senior leaders, ministers, and other stakeholders.
Stakeholder consultation: Engaging with expert groups and a wide range of internal and external stakeholders to ensure the effectiveness and relevance of policy.
Leadership and people management: Managing a team of policy professionals, providing regular feedback, addressing performance issues, resolving conflicts, and supporting staff development and career progression.
To succeed in this role, you will need to demonstrate the following:
Leadership skills: Proven ability to lead teams, drive policy reforms, and manage staff with a focus on performance and professional growth.
Expertise in WHS policy: Experience in workplace health and safety policy or a related field.
Strong communication skills: Ability to prepare clear, concise, and well-structured policy documents and briefs, and to engage with a wide range of stakeholders.
Stakeholder management: Ability to navigate complex stakeholder landscapes, build relationships, and influence outcomes.
Legal or policy background: A degree in law or a related discipline is highly regarded, as well as experience in legal policy or regulatory reform.
