About the position   Commencing in January 2025, for a period of two years , we are looking for a Cadet Systems Engineer to join our organisation.
In this role, you will build upon your studies by gaining practical experience and training in systems engineering within a local government context.
You will be provided with a comprehensive learning experience, allowing you the application of theoretical knowledge in a practical work environment.
You will have a training plan developed specifically for you, giving you the opportunity to support the development, implementation, and maintenance of the Council's information systems and infrastructure.
The position is full time employment for two (2) years for undergraduates currently studying a Bachelor of Computer Science; and entering their final year of studies in 2025, with the ability to study part-time.
This entry level position provides an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience in Council's Information and Communication Technology Team.

About you Currently studying a Bachelor of Computer Science and entering final year of studies in 2025, with the ability to study part-time.
Current Drivers Licence (minimum NSW Provisional P1 Licence or equivalent).
Australian permanent residency.
Industry certifications (preferred or required) such as: Microsoft Certified: Fundamentals (Azure, Microsoft 365) or Associate certifications like Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator or Microsoft 365 Certified: Modern Desktop Administrator; CompTIA IT Fundamentals or A+ Certification; ITIL Foundation Certification (desirable for understanding service management).
Understanding of Microsoft Office 365 applications and experience with administration tasks, including setting up accounts, permissions, and managing access.
Knowledge of Active Directory fundamentals, including user account management, permissions, group policies, and basic security configurations.
Familiarity with virtualization technologies such as Hyper-V or VMware, including creating and managing virtual machines (VMs).
Basic knowledge of cloud services, especially Microsoft Azure, including virtual machines, storage, and basic networking.
Hands-on experience with setting up and managing cloud resources is a plus.
Understanding of backup solutions and the importance of data integrity, with experience in managing or assisting with backup configurations and recovery plans.
Skills in generating reports on system performance, incidents, or other key metrics using tools like Microsoft Excel, Power BI, or other reporting software.
Analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a focus on learning and continuous improvement.
Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain technical information to non-technical staff and collaborate with team members.
Willingness to work in a team environment, taking guidance from senior engineers and sharing knowledge where possible.
Attention to detail in documentation, configurations, and system monitoring to support reliable Council operations.
Adaptability and eagerness to learn new technologies, methodologies, and systems relevant to the evolving IT landscape in a local government setting.
Demonstrated key capabilities as defined in the Key Capabilities Table (outlined in the Position Description).
We offer Temporary full time employment for 2 years, working 35 hours per week.
The opportunity to kick-start your career and gain professional experience in local government whilst completing your final year of university studies; the opportunity to study part-time and the provision of paid study leave one day per week.
Salary is dependent on qualifications, skills and experience.
Plus 11.5% superannuation.
