Work on our in-house publication The CitizenAttend news and public events as directed, chasing down leads and breaking storiesAbout the Role The Centre for Advancing Journalism has a part-time (0.9 FTE) trainee role for a Cadet Journalist, aimed at a recent graduate or current student enrolled in the Master of Journalism or the Master of International Journalism at the University of Melbourne. This philanthropically funded role is made possible through the generosity of the May and Romeo Schiavon Journalism Fund.
You will have the exciting opportunity to work on our in-house publication The Citizen, collaborating with our editors to research and craft compelling stories on a variety of topics. You will attend key events, stay on top of the latest news, and have the chance to break stories.
Your responsibilities will include: Frontline reporter working on news and features for The CitizenWorking under the direction of the editors, researching and writing stories on a range of topicsAttending news and public events as directed, chasing down leads and breaking storiesEmploying a range of story-telling techniques, incorporating pictorial, audio-visual social and multi-mediaContributing to paste-up and monitoring of the websiteUsing social media to enhance story-telling and help build The Citizen's audienceWho We Are Looking For We are looking for a recent or soon-to-be graduate of the Master of Journalism (MJ) or Master of International Journalism (MIJ) at the University of Melbourne. Ideal candidates will have completed key journalism subjects with strong results, including practical courses in newsroom practices or multimedia journalism.
You have excellent reporting, multimedia, and writing skills, demonstrated through coursework and professional publications. Passionate about current affairs, you possess a solid understanding of ethical journalistic practices and thrive both independently and as part of a team. Enthusiasm and flexibility are key for this role!
You will also have: Applicants must have either completed the Master of Journalism (MJ) or the Master of International Journalism at the University of Melbourne in 2024, or be an enrolled MJ or MIJ student at the time of application who is very close to completing (in the final 50 points of their degree)Completed JOUR90001 Researching and Writing Stories or JOUR90020 International Journalism-Key Skills and at least one of JOUR90010 Newsroom: Applied Professional Practice and/or JOUR90005 Audio Journalism, and/or JOUR90008 Video Journalism, scoring H2A or above in bothThis role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check.
