Curtin University invites applications for the role of Technical Operations Coordinator , a key position designed to drive the operational excellence of our Kalgoorlie Campus's technical facilities, supporting Western Australian School of Mines, Minerals Energy and Chemical Engineering (WASM:MECE). This role offers the unique opportunity to lead a team dedicated to supporting cutting-edge teaching and research in the heart of Australia's mining industry.
This is a Monday to Friday position - no weekends - giving you the freedom to enjoy the unique lifestyle that Kalgoorlie offers. Your New Role
As Technical Operations Coordinator , you will be at the forefront of managing day-to-day operations for laboratories, workshops, and research facilities, ensuring optimal resource allocation for Metallurgical Engineering and Mining Engineering activities. You will lead a dedicated team, fostering a collaborative, high-performing environment through mentorship, training, and performance management.
An exciting aspect of this role is your involvement in the development of Curtin's state-of-the-art Pyrometallurgical facility . This multi-million-dollar project will be a major asset to the WASM Campus, and you will play a key role in its delivery.
Key Responsibilities: Coordinate daily operations across workshops, laboratories, and research facilities to optimise resources and space for teaching and research projects. Lead and mentor a team of technical staff, fostering a positive and collaborative work environment while promoting ongoing professional development. Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety regulations , enforcing safety protocols and maintaining a safe working environment. Oversee the maintenance and servicing of laboratory equipment and technical facilities. Develop, implement, and continuously update standard operating procedures for laboratory and workshop operations. Collaborate with faculty members, students, and external suppliers to ensure the successful delivery of teaching and research projects. Contribute to the design, modification, and refurbishment of technical facilities and equipment to support current and future operational needs. Play a lead role in the development of new equipment and systems , ensuring safety, functionality, and alignment with operational goals. Manage access control, coordinate inductions, and liaise with security to ensure compliance with safety and access protocols for restricted areas. Who You Are
We are looking for a proactive and dynamic leader with a strong background in technical operations or laboratory management. You will have a passion for safety, problem-solving, and continuous improvement.
Our ideal candidate will demonstrate:
A relevant degree in Mining Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgy, or a related field, or substantial experience in a technical or laboratory management role. Proven experience in leading and managing teams within technical or laboratory settings, with a focus on developing staff and fostering a positive work environment. Expertise in the operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment , with a strong commitment to health and safety compliance. Exceptional organisational skills, with a keen ability to manage multiple tasks and projects efficiently. Strong communication and interpersonal skills , with the ability to collaborate effectively with a variety of stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students, and external partners. The ability to approach challenges with a solutions-focused mindset , demonstrating resilience and creativity in problem-solving. Selection Criteria: A relevant degree qualification and considerable relevant Laboratory management experience and expertise; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training. Demonstrated leadership and management skills with the ability to manage a technical/laboratory facility and a team of technical support staff in the provision of technical support services. Highly developed organisational skills with ability to plan and organise self and others to ensure timely completion of activities and tasks. Demonstrated experience and skills in the conduct of experiments and experience in the application and use of equipment and/or systems relevant to the discipline. Demonstrated knowledge of, and commitment to ensuring, Occupational Safety and Health practices and regulations are followed. High level interpersonal skills with the ability to develop, maintain and enhance professional working relationships across a wide range of areas and organisational levels. Well-developed verbal and written communication skills with the ability to recognise and deal sensitively and constructively with situations using appropriate negotiation skills and influencing styles to achieve positive outcomes. Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills with the ability to offer solutions to complex operational issues. Demonstrated ability to identify and implement process improvements to increase effectiveness and efficiency of support effort and service quality. Applications close: Sunday 19th January 2025.
