The role gives you the opportunity to contribute to improvements to the legal aid and criminal justice systems. We support our staff through ongoing professional development opportunities and mentoring, and a balanced approach to work.
In this role you will: Represent clients, including preparing matters, instructing counsel and personally appearing for: Accused persons in all general criminal law matters, particularly in the Magistrates Court but also District Court sentences; Clients appearing before specific courts, including the Court of Appeal, the Mental Health Court, the Children's Courts, and other related jurisdictions; Legally aided parties in coronial and proceeds of crime / confiscation proceedings; Respondents to applications by the Attorney-General under the Dangerous Prisoners (Sexual Offenders) Act 2003. Provide legal information and advice to clients and the public. Provide duty lawyer services in the Magistrates and Children's Courts and appear on higher court call-overs and mentions. About you You must demonstrate to a high degree the ability to prepare and appear in all aspects of criminal law cases, in various jurisdictions, including appellate. You can demonstrate to a high degree the ability to conduct quasi-criminal law matters, such as inquests, inquiries, bail applications, compulsory hearings, diversionary courts, Dangerous Prisoner (Sexual Offenders) Act 2003 matters, and Mental Health Court referrals.
You have a thorough working knowledge of criminal law practice and procedure, legislation relating to the criminal justice system, and the laws of evidence and ethical standards. You are responsive to guidance and performance feedback. You are committed to self-development and knowledge building for both yourself and others in criminal law and procedure.
You build and sustain positive relationships with team members and contribute to your workplace. You communicate effectively with colleagues, external stakeholders, and clients with complex needs in both oral and written formats.
