The Coroner's Court conducts inquests into deaths which occurred, or are suspected to have occurred, in particular circumstances and conducts inquiries into fires and natural disasters if requested, or, in the case of fires, on the Coroner's own initiative.
The Coroner is required to make findings in respect of an inquest about the identity of a deceased person and the cause of death, or in an inquiry, about the cause and origin of fire.
In both cases, the Coroner must determine whether any matters of public safety are found to arise.
The Executive Director, Coroners Court works closely with the Chief Coroner and Coroner to progress coronial matters in accordance with the Coroners Act 1997 and, if appointed, to act as counsel-assisting the Coroner.
The Executive Director's role includes managing the coronial team, which comprises legal and non-legal staff, overseeing the operations of the Forensic Medicine Centre, and providing legal support to the Coroner.
The Executive Director is also appointed as a deputy registrar of the Magistrates Court.
