The Role
Vice Chief of Defence Force Group (VCDFG), Force Integration Division (FID) are seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual to fulfil the position of EL 2 Director Australian Defence Force (ADF) Doctrine. As one of four Directors within Joint Warfare Development Branch (JWDB), you lead the ADF Doctrine program on behalf of the Chief of the Defence Force (CDF), and the Vice Chief of Defence Force (VCDF) / Joint Force Authority. ADF Doctrine continues to provide authoritative guidance to the Force In Being to solve and/or achieve military objectives. ADF Doctrine facilitates procedural interoperability across the ADF and with partners and allies, providing a unitary body of knowledge, shared language and common frame of reference for the integrated force.
ADF Doctrine directly supports ADF preparedness by underpinning the professional military education and training of all ADF personnel. ADF Doctrine modernisation since 2021 has resulted in the refresh of all ADF Doctrine publications, a re-scoped ADF Doctrine hierarchy reflecting delegated 3 Star and Band 3 Doctrine Sponsors, and improved readability and accessibility to ADF Doctrine for the public and Defence members as directed by CDF Directive 10/2022 - Management of ADF Doctrine. The ADF Doctrine management system is centrally coordinated by Doctrine Directorate and de-centrally executed by Groups and Services.
Director ADF Doctrine coordinates and supports Doctrine Sponsor representatives to operationalise strategy and policy to ensure the development and maintenance of contemporary ADF Doctrine, the ADF Doctrine architecture, and contextualised Defence terminology in the Australian Defence Glossary.
This key strategic position is ideally suited to an experienced, agile and innovative Policy or Program Director comfortable working across policy portfolios, strategic document suites, with the Defence Senior Leadership Team and with experience in/coordinating the profession or arms. Reporting direct to Director General Joint Warfare Development Branch (DG JWDB), you lead an experienced, collegiate, integrated, and resourced Directorate team, facilitating cross Defence ADF Doctrine outcomes.
Your specific roles and responsibilities include:
Lead the ADF Doctrine program across all Defence Groups and Services to support 4 and 3 Star / Band 3 Doctrine Sponsors in development, upkeep and evaluation of ADF Doctrine. Lead centralised coordination of ADF Doctrine governance / ADF Doctrine management system, on behalf of VCDF / Joint Force Authority and the ADF Doctrine System Manager, Head Force Integration (HFI), for delivery by Groups and Services. Modernise ADF doctrine production, publishing and accessibility to support Defence outcomes. Lead ADF Doctrine Adaptation to apply joint warfare lessons analyses and outcome evaluation in continuous improvement of ADF Doctrine and ADF Concepts. Maintain the ADF Doctrine architecture, systems, delivery program and terminology to ensure standardisation, consistency, and harmonisation of ADF Doctrine, warfighting constructs, and contextualised terminology in order to optimise human and procedural interoperability. Provide guidance as required to HFI / DG JWDB on matters pertaining to the development, maintenance and application of ADF Doctrine. Member and rotational Lead for the Quinquepartite Combined Joint Warfare Conference (QCJWC) (with US, UK, CAN, AUS, NZ) - Doctrine, and Lessons conferences; and ADF representative to NATO Allied Joint Operational Doctrine WG. Direct and manage the Canberra and geographically dispersed ADF, APS and contracted workforce in Doctrine Directorate, JWDB. Support delivery of Joint Warfare Development priorities and outcomes for the Defence Lessons Program, ADF Concepts, Joint Experimentation, and Defence Test and Evaluation. About our Team
The Doctrine Directorate operates within the Joint Warfare Development Branch, Force Integration Division. Our mission is to coordinate and support delivery of ADF doctrine by Sponsors in order to promote the interoperability and professional mastery of the integrated force.
Our role is to codify ADF doctrinal constructs for the Enhanced Force In Being to support Operations, Actions and Investment (OAI).
Doctrine Directorate is a collegiate, professional, integrated, geographically dispersed team comprised of around 39 ADF, APS and contracted staff.

Excellent communication, EQ and people skills remain central to achievement in this role, within the broader integrated team environment.
