The opportunity
ASIO is seeking exceptional Senior Technical Specialists with a focus on Solution Architecture in Networks or Platform Systems to drive our cutting-edge capability program.
As a key member of our diverse team of technical specialists, you'll play a crucial role in designing, developing, and supporting the ICT systems and infrastructure that underpin ASIO's critical mission.

A merit pool may be created to fill future vacancies which have the same or similar requirements to this position.
This merit pool will be valid for up to 18 months.
This role may attract an additional technical skills allowance of up to 10% of base salary.
Role responsibilities
The Senior Technical Specialist is one of the most senior technical positions responsible for providing strategic technical leadership and expertise in the design, implementation, and operation of ASIO's Enterprise environments.
This role is critical in ensuring the security, reliability, and performance of ASIO's ICT Systems, which support the organisation's core intelligence functions.
Senior Technical Specialist – Senior Network Engineer / Architect
As a Senior Technical Specialist – Senior Network Engineer / Architect in ASIO, you will:
Provide technical guidance and direction to the Network Services team, ensuring that network architecture and engineering activities align with ASIO's strategic objectives and technical standards.
Design, develop, and maintain ASIO's network architecture, ensuring it is secure, scalable, and aligned with industry best practices.
Lead the design, implementation, and testing of network infrastructure projects, collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of network solutions that meet organisational standards and requirements.
Stay up-to-date with emerging network technologies and trends, identifying opportunities for innovation and improvement in ASIO's network infrastructure.
Identify and manage technical and security risks associated with network infrastructure, developing and implementing mitigation strategies as required.
Ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and standards, including the Australian Government's Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF) and the Information Security Manual (ISM).
Share technical knowledge and expertise with other team members, contributing to the development of a skilled and capable Network Services team.
Senior Technical Specialist – Solutions Architect Platforms Systems
As a Senior Technical Specialist – Solutions Architect Platforms Systems in ASIO, you will:
Provide technical guidance and direction to the Server Services team, ensuring that solutions architecture and engineering activities align with ASIO's strategic objectives and technical standards.
Design, develop, and maintain ASIO's enterprise environments, ensuring they are secure, scalable, and aligned with industry best practices.
Lead the design, implementation, and testing of platform infrastructure projects, collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of enterprise solutions that meet organisational standards and requirements.
Stay up-to-date with emerging enterprise technologies and trends, identifying opportunities for innovation and improvement in ASIO's enterprise platforms.
Identify and manage technical and security risks associated with server, storage, virtualisation and containerisation platforms infrastructure, developing and implementing mitigation strategies as required.
Ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and standards, including the Australian Government's Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF) and the Information Security Manual (ISM).
Set technical direction, provide leadership and mentorship, whilst applying your own subject matter expertise by actively participating in hands-on systems implementation or administration to guide the planning and delivery of fit-for-purpose technical solutions in the organisation's technical environment.
Escalate risks, issues and critical dependencies to the appropriate leaders as required to ensure the successful delivery of the strategy.
What you will bring
For the Senior Technical Specialist – Senior Network Engineer / Architect role, we invite applications from people with the following attributes:
Relevant tertiary qualifications in information technology, computer science or related disciplines.
5 or more years of experience in network administration or engineering, with expertise in: Cisco routing, switching and access platforms (IOS XE, SD-WAN, Catalyst).
Cisco Data Centre platforms (NX-OS and ACI).
Cisco security and management platforms (ISE, Firepower, DNAC).
Cisco UC Platforms (Call Manager, Cisco Meeting Server).
Industry certifications such as Cisco CCNA / CCNP / CCIE or equivalent are advantageous.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with excellent communication and documentation skills.
Ability to work effectively in a team environment, with a collaborative and supportive mindset.
For the Senior Technical Specialist – Solutions Architect Platforms Systems role, we invite applications from people with the following attributes:
Relevant tertiary qualifications in information technology, computer science or related disciplines.
5 or more years of experience in System administration or engineering, with expertise in: Industry certifications (Microsoft / Red Hat / VMware certifications, ITIL Foundation in IT Service Management) are desirable, but not required.
Certification in TOGAF or related enterprise architecture framework is highly desirable.
On-premise data centre architectures, including knowledge of server hardware, storage systems, networking equipment, and data centre cooling and power requirements.
Design and implementation of failover and disaster recovery for critical systems.
Virtualisation and containerisation technologies.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with excellent communication and documentation skills.
Ability to work effectively in a team environment, with a collaborative and supportive mindset.
