The Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation (ILSC) is a corporate Commonwealth entity established under the ATSI Act and subject to the PGPA Act. The ILSC assists Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to realise economic, social, cultural and environmental benefits that the ownership and management of land, water and related rights can bring. The ILSC provides this assistance through the acquisition and management of rights and interests in land, salt water and freshwater country.
Our Senior Legal Counsel Role
The ILSC is seeking a high calibre commercial/property lawyer with 7+ years or similar experience to join our well-established legal team and contribute to a broad range of transactional and advisory matters. Under the broad direction of the General Counsel, but acting with relative autonomy, you will assist the ILSC to meet its goals and support the organisation by providing astute and commercially savvy advice in the context of the ATSI and PGPA legislation. With a diverse range of projects and advisory areas, this role is both rewarding and challenging as it assists the ILSC to deliver economic, environmental, social and/or cultural benefits to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.
Under the broad direction of the General Counsel you will:
Oversee the legal aspects of the acquisitions and grants programs, including contract drafting, legal and commercial negotiations, and advice on project management. Operate with a considerable amount of autonomy in addressing significant and sometimes complex legal or policy issues. Apply your analytical and problem-solving skills to complex legal and policy issues impacting on the ILSC. Provide high-level legal services regarding the ILSC's acquisition, management and administrative functions to ensure compliance with legislative obligations. Have carriage over security and property law matters. Contribute to the training of ILSC employees and the performance of legal employees, including contributing to the development of individuals in the team. Contribute positively to deliver high quality legal advice to ensure that the ILSC is best placed to meet its operational and strategic outcomes, and assist in the efficient and effective functioning of the ILSC.

To be considered for this role you will have around 7 or more years of commercial experience gained in a quality law firm or in-house corporate or government team. You will have sound knowledge of and experience in (one of more of) Property, Commercial, Administrative and Native Title Law. You will demonstrate the ability to develop strong working relationships with a broad range of individuals and groups, have quality drafting skills and the ability to deal with complex legal matters and sometimes novel questions of law. You will be pro-active and timely in your advice, and work co-operatively with clients to assist them achieve their commercial objectives. Possession of a valid driver's license is essential.
