Bowen Basin Based Head of Health & Safety When I sat down with the GM of this business to be briefed, his words were clear and to the point. "Find me a top talent, contemporary Head of Health & Safety. I want a leader who can do the strategic and future piece, of course, but I need them to be action oriented and out there around the site, being visible, building relationships and engaging team members at all levels. I want them to build the image, reputation, and reality of Health & Safety as a vital part of the business. They need to deliver, and be seen as delivering, solutions, programs, systems, processes, and outcomes that add real value and reinforce our reputation as a pace setter in the industry. As a key member of our Senior Leadership Team they need to engage their peers and take them along for the ride and support their delivery of outcomes. So, knowledge, skills, track record are important, but style and fit is of paramount importance. For that reason, I'm happy to look at existing Heads of Health & Safety, but I'll happily look at the next level down if they're equipped to step up and perform at this level. This is a critical appointment for me!"
So, in a nutshell, that's the brief. I'm guessing you'd like to know more about the business? Well, it's an extremely successful operator in the coal mining industry. They have an enviable reputation as an employer of real choice. This comes back to the creation of a very strong and positive culture which, in turn, has resulted in great stability within the workforce and a queue of people who want to work with them. Culture is more than silver framed words on a boardroom wall – it's about accountability, no excuses, looking for better ways to do things, developing people and ensuring that people go home each night in the same state in which they arrived! The business is strategically led, operationally strong and financially secure. It is focused on delivering outcomes through people, with Health & Safety being up there at number one. This is obviously where you come in.
The role? Well, as outlined above, you'll be looking to the future and advising the business on the big picture Health & Safety initiatives that need to be rolled out to ensure ongoing compliance and risk management within this heavily regulated industry. You'll be inheriting a highly motivated and energised team and, both with and through them, ensuring that the right systems, processes, critical controls, and structures are in place to deliver peak Health & Safety outcomes that meet the business needs whilst ensuring compliance. There is a need to build SLT relationships and understand all parts of the business so that a customer-centric approach to the function becomes embedded. It's about you and your team being proactive and responsive, agile, and commercially realistic. Your team will need ongoing development so there are realistic succession plans in place. The team is keen and eager to learn but they do need an internal role model and mentor. As you have no doubt concluded, this is the opportunity for you to make a real mark and shape the function, the team, and its impact.
And you? Ideally you'll have a relevant tertiary qualification in this field, but of greater importance is evidence of you remaining contemporary through regular training in Health and Safety, in safety systems and people leadership. As mentioned above, you may well be already operating at this level in any of the industries mentioned in the advertisement sub-headings. However, we will genuinely consider you if you are a proven 2/1c or Superintendent and you are ready to step up into a Senior Leadership Team position. Either way, you will need a track record that screams success in all those areas mentioned earlier. You're bright, engaging and can "read the room", understanding that there is often more than one way to reach a goal and that shaping and influencing positive outcomes requires thoughtfulness, empathy, flexibility, and insight into how others think when faced with their own work challenges. This isn't a role for someone who likes to sit in their office or maintain a status quo. Success demands that you're out there, in touch with real needs and able to factor them into your strategies and plans.
Of course, you will want to understand the benefits that are on offer. Base salary will be negotiated to reflect your skills and abilities and what you bring to the table. On top there is a company vehicle, superannuation, and a bonus of up to 30% of base split between corporate and individual goals being achieved. We're happy for you to be FIFO or DIDO, with airfares being paid for. Remuneration aside, you'll also enjoy being part of a developing, thinking, and high-performing SLT, the members of which are not afraid to be challenged or to challenge each other. There is a strong feeling of teamwork in place. The team actively engages in regular development and review exercises, is quite open to feedback, and conversations can be robust but always fair.
