The Indigenous Advisory Committee (IAC) is an independent, expert, statutory committee established under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).
The IAC provides expert Indigenous advice to the Australian Government Minister for the Environment on the operation of the EPBC Act, taking into account the significance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' knowledge of the management of land, sea and the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.
The positions are part time and remunerated under the Remuneration Tribunal Determination for Part-time Public Office Holders.
Please note : Successful board member appointees will be placed on a merit list to be engaged as required in up to a 12-month period.
Role of the Board Members Members are appointed by the Minister for the Environment based on their skills, experience and expertise in Indigenous land and sea management, conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, and cultural heritage management. They are not appointed to represent regions or organisations.
All members must have: Expertise in Indigenous land and sea management, conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, and/or cultural heritage management. Effective communication skills and the ability to communicate and negotiate effectively and respectfully, both verbally and in writing, with members, the minister and the department's staff and senior executive. Proven ability to build relationships, to overcome conflict and contribute to an agreed IAC approach to provide advice to the minister and the department. A strong understanding of the EPBC Act, ministerial priorities and department's strategic objectives and an ability to adapt to new and emerging government priorities. Time to commit to the role, and the ability to work closely with the Chair and secretariat (provided by the department) to ensure advice is provided in a timely manner, through meetings and out of session requests as required. These member positions are available only to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander candidates. Members can be located nationally across Australia. Meetings are held in a combination of virtual/remote or in person, largely in Canberra, ACT.
