We are looking for a motivated team member to join Plant Biosecurity and Product Integrity at Coopers Plains to maintain Queensland's Biosecurity by:
Providing support and assisting in managing our biosecurity system to safeguard our environment, economy, communities, and lifestyle from biosecurity threats.
Actively participating in daily operations across a broad range of activities, focusing on the delivery of operational plans and providing high-quality service to clients.
Contributing by administering legislation, implementing strategies, and following policy and procedures.
Contributing ideas and being part of a broader team by committing to ongoing development.
Responsibilities include:
Independently undertaking tasks contributing to the protection of Queensland's biosecurity system(s) by conducting field-based monitoring, surveillance, auditing, and treatment activities, gathering information, and recording evidence to assist investigations of potential legislative breaches (in line with operational plans).
Being appointed and operating as an Inspector under the Biosecurity Act 2014 and/or Chemical Usage (Agricultural and Veterinary) Control Act 1988 and/or Agricultural and Chemicals Distributions Act 1966 and/or Drugs Misuse Act 1986 to ensure the integrity of Queensland Agricultural conduct investigations into:
Biosecurity risk associated with plant pest or disease.
Alleged chemical misuse, Maximum Residue Level (MRL) exceedances, and contaminants in agricultural produce, livestock, and feeds.
Assisting the facilitation of trade by undertaking inspection and auditing compliance of Queensland businesses:
As part of the Interstate Certification Assurance (ICA) scheme.
By providing government inspection services.
By assessing applications for the movement of commodities within Queensland against biosecurity zone provisions that are industrial cannabis license holders.
Working as part of a team to conduct surveillance for plant pest and disease, chemical residue and contaminate analysis, and monitoring activities including collection of relevant samples for laboratory analysis.
Working with external stakeholders to facilitate their legislative compliance in managing biosecurity risks associated with plant pests and diseases, and promotion of responsible Agvet chemical use.
This includes:
Responding to inquiries and providing accurate and timely technical advice reflecting current policy, escalating matters to relevant departmental staff, where required.
Developing and maintaining effective working relationships with relevant internal and external stakeholders to promote biosecurity risk management and government policy.
Participating in responses (e.g., emergency response pest and disease, contaminants, and natural disaster) at a district, state-wide, or interstate level. This can include fieldwork in remote areas and/or being based away from home for periods of time, more than one week.
Participating in professional development, to acquire and develop expertise and skills applicable to the role of a Biosecurity Officer.
Mandatory qualifications:
It is a mandatory requirement for a technical officer to possess an Australian Diploma or Associate Diploma or higher qualification in a relevant field (e.g., agriculture or environment) from a recognised tertiary institute.
For international qualifications, the applicant will need their qualification assessed to determine comparability with the Australian Qualifications Framework.
The Department of Employment, Small Business and Training can assist with these assessments for Queensland residents.
