Bat Specialist – Up to Senior appointmentNature Advisory Pty Ltd is an employee-owned specialist consulting ecological company, providing expert advice, field services, and reporting to organisations, governments and private clients ecosystem monitoring and management projects. We specialise in renewable energy development ecological assessments and seek to ensure environmental impacts from these projects are minimised. This allows us to make a positive contribution to conserving environmental values while supporting the growth of the renewable energy sector. As an environmental firm, it's also important to us that the impact of our own operations are considered and we are carbon neutral.
We are the leading provider of bird and bat ecological services to the wind energy industry and primarily work throughout Australia's eastern states. We specialise in pre-construction ecological impact assessments, identifying relevant issues, implementing appropriate monitoring, and creating workable alternatives to avoid, minimise and mitigate impacts on bird and bats. We design and deliver field services, prepare technical reports and assist clients through the regulatory process. We are also leading providers in post-construction monitoring, implementing routine surveys, responding to impacts on threatened species and undertaking targeted surveys.
We are seeking a qualified and experienced candidate to play a leading role in our bat assessment services across Vic, SA, TAS, NSW, and Qld. The ideal candidate will be joining our team of 30+ ecologists and ornithologists in a senior, advisory role and have a proven track record in ecological assessments, particularly relating to bats, with an emphasis on delivering professional, accurate and robust reporting and advice within relevant regulatory contexts.
The successful experienced candidate will support the team in implementing new and ongoing projects. This will involve facilitating, guiding and directing bat field studies to assess sites being considered for renewable energy projects. You will support the team by guiding general bat assessments and targeted assessment on key species to provide inputs into the development of layout and other measures to mitigate the impact of these developments on bats. For this position, field work may not be necessary. However, for those applicants interested, field surveys are also possible.
Location:Victoria, based in Melbourne. Or attached to office in Canberra, Brisbane or Armidale will also be considered. Permanent – full time.
The role will include:Guiding the design and implementation bat surveys throughout Vic, SA, TAS, NSW, and Qld;Directing general and targeted bat studies;Guiding specialist assessments on bat species of interest to ensure impacts of wind energy facilities are minimised;Expert inputs into bat identification;Expert inputs bat habitat mapping;Completing bat risk assessments and reporting, including high level reporting;Exploring, developing and evaluating bat impact mitigation measures; andProject management, and Involvement in meetings with clients and regulators.Key position criteria:Tertiary qualifications in zoology or ecology;Experience in designing and undertaking acoustic bat surveys;Strong bat call analysis and identification skills;Excellent field identification skills, particularly throughout eastern Australia;Strong knowledge of bats and their habitat preferences;Strong knowledge of State and Commonwealth regulations relating to threatened Bats;Strong ecological data and interpretation experience;High quality reporting skills; andAbility to work well independently, as well as within a team.Minimum 3 years' experience in an ecological consulting role;Project Management experience (liaising with clients, day-to-day planning and implementing field work);Associations with the broader bat research community in Australia;Experience in bat identification and all bat survey techniques;Experience in undertaking remote fieldwork;Experience in leading field teams;Experience and competence in the use of 4WDs;Knowledge of field work OH&S protocols; andKnowledge of other fauna groups.Benefits include:Attractive salary commensurate with skills and experience;Five weeks annual leave each year;Flexible working conditions;Mentoring by experienced staff and options for career progression and, after a qualifying period, possible share ownership;Pet friendly office in Melbourne and Canberra; andSocial activities outside of work hours in Melbourne.Our national wind farm team has over 30 ecologists and ornithologists, and we work throughout Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, New South Wales and Queensland.
