In this role, you will be a key member of a multidisciplinary team, providing primary medical care to Defence personnel. You will play a critical role in assessing fitness for duty, delivering both pre- and post-deployment care to support the health and well-being of personnel.
As a thought leader in aviation medicine, you'll collaborate with Senior Medical Officers and uniformed personnel, offering expert medical advice and technical support to medical units, health commands, and leadership teams.
Job Summary We are seeking a dedicated Civilian Aviation Medical Officer to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for conducting comprehensive aviation medical assessments, providing expert medical advice, and ensuring compliance with aviation health standards at both national and international levels. This role is pivotal in maintaining the health, safety, and readiness of aviation personnel to perform in high-demand environments.
Key Responsibilities As a Medical Officer, you'll play a crucial role in delivering high-quality medical services, with a focus on aviation-based care. Your responsibilities will include:
Conducting aviation medical services, such as fitness-to-fly assessments, aviation medicals, and aircrew clinical health management, in compliance with professional standards, legislation, and Defence policies. Providing expert medical advice to the Joint Health Unit (JHU) Commanding Officer, Joint Health Command (JHC) Health Centre Manager, and unit Commanders. Offering care in both outpatient settings and, when necessary, inpatient care within hospitals or medical centers. Collaborating effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team to ensure the best outcomes for patients. General Practitioners without an AvMed qualification may be considered. Qualifications and Experience Current, unconditional, and unrestricted General Registration as a Medical Practitioner in Australia with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Fellowship with one of the following: Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP or FARGP), Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (FACRRM), or Vocational Registration. A minimum of 2 years' full-time postgraduate experience as a general practitioner within the last 5 years, or equivalent part-time experience (GPT Registrar rotations are counted). Recent participation in Continuous Professional Development (CPD) in line with AHPRA and ACAsM requirements, particularly for those holding civilian or ADF AvMed qualifications. Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (HLTAID009) certification. Australian Defence Force Aviation Medical Officer Course, United States Air Force Primary Aerospace Medicine Course, or equivalent US Navy or US Army basic courses. Equivalent military AVMED course as approved by the Commanding Officer AVMED, or a Civilian AVMED course, with relevant military experience as determined by the Commanding Officer AVMED. Please note: You must be an Australian Citizen to obtain the required Baseline Security Clearance for this role. You don't need to be enlisted in the Defence Force to work as a civilian on-base and your job stays here, even if the Defence personnel you care for are deployed.
