Researcher/Analyst/Senior Analyst - Defence Strategy Join ASPI's defence strategy team focused on military capability and strategy, Australia's defence policy and security challenges in the Indo-Pacific. ASPI is looking for an excellent senior analyst/analyst/researcher to join its defence strategy team. About ASPI
ASPI is an independent, non-partisan think tank that produces expert and timely advice for strategic, defence and policy leaders and decision makers. ASPI is one of the most authoritative and widely quoted contributors to public discussion of strategic policy issues in the Indo-Pacific region and a recognised Australian voice in international discussion on defence, strategic, national security, cyber, critical technology, climate and foreign interference issues.
The Role
There are a small number of potential roles available in ASPI's Defence Strategy Program, across multiple levels including researcher, analyst and senior analyst. This is an exceptional opportunity for talented individuals to contribute to the work of Australia's leading think tank on defence and strategic policy issues.
We are looking for individuals who have expertise on one or more of the following topics:
Defence policy and military strategy in the Australian context Defence capability – Australia and the region Regional security issues Australian and regional defence capability development, force structure, acquisition and industry Defence economics and budgeting Defence technology Duty Statement
Senior Analysts
Senior analysts usually have a minimum of 12 years relevant work experience. In consultation with the Director - Defence Strategy and other senior staff, senior analysts:
Produce high quality research reports, short-form analysis pieces, podcasts and other outputs which contribute to ASPI's research priorities. Project manage high-quality research reports, including pitching projects, managing project budgets and the peer review process, and working with the communications team to promote reports. Engage with stakeholders and manage relationships across governments, industry and civil society. Represent ASPI in the public debate, including media, and at public events. Assist in the planning and conduct of conferences, dialogues, workshops and other events. Support the Director in fundraising and developing major initiatives, including grant applications and pitching projects to potential stakeholders. Identify opportunities to collaborate with other think tanks, in Australia and globally, including for 1.5 track dialogues and joint project initiatives. Contribute to a positive workplace culture that includes supporting and mentoring analysts, researchers and secondees. Other duties as directed in support of ASPI's objectives. Analysts
Analysts usually have a minimum of 5-7 years relevant work experience. In consultation with the director and senior staff within the Defence Strategy program, analysts:
Contribute to high quality research reports, short-form analysis pieces, podcasts and other outputs which contribute to ASPI's research priorities. Assist with project management of research projects, including pitches, budgets, peer review and communications. Assist in the planning and conduct of conferences, dialogues, workshops and other events. Engage with stakeholders across governments, industry and civil society. Support senior staff in fundraising and developing major initiatives and project proposals, including assisting with grant applications. Coordinate research and project activities. Represent ASPI in the public debate and at public events. Other duties as directed in support of ASPI's objectives. Researchers
Researchers usually have a minimum of 2 years relevant work experience. In consultation with senior staff within the Defence Strategy and National Security Program researchers:
Contribute to high quality research reports. Contribute written analysis to ASPI's commentary site The Strategist and other media outlets. Engage with stakeholders across governments, industry and civil society. Assist in the planning and conduct of seminars and other events. Coordinate research and project activities. Represent ASPI in public events. Selection Criteria
The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate:
Related work and research experience, with proven expertise in analysis of defence capability and strategic policy issues. Collaborative individuals who enjoy working as part of a team, including through seeking and sharing feedback and debating and discussing strategic policy issues with colleagues to strengthen and refine outputs. Advanced research skills and a proven record of publishing original research. Advanced writing, editing and analytical skills. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including good public presentation skills. Tertiary qualifications, displaying a record of sound academic achievement. Understanding of Australia's defence and national security architecture as well as regional security issues. Ability to work with limited direction to initiate, set priorities and manage research projects and project grants (senior analyst). Desirable Qualifications:
Experience preparing grant proposals and research funding applications. Relevant technical or data collection skills relevant to the topics you work on. Applicants for this role will ideally be based in, or willing to relocate to, Canberra, ACT.
Remuneration will be competitive and commensurate with experience. The successful candidate is ideally working from ASPI's office in Canberra, ACT.
