Who we areThe Office of the Supervising Scientist ensures the protection of the Alligator Rivers Region, including Kakadu National Park, and the local communities from the effects of uranium mining by undertaking environmental research and monitoring, participating in and overseeing the regulatory process and developing standards and practices for environmental protection.
The Supervising Scientist Branch (SSB) focuses on assessing the radiation impacts to the public and the environment from uranium mining. Our technical capabilities and current work program include:
low level radiochemistry, alpha and gamma spectrometry laboratories measurement of natural decay series radionuclides in air, soil, water and biota (including Aboriginal bush foods) radiation surveys of legacy and rehabilitated uranium mining sites modelling and assessment of radiation exposure pathways to the public and non-human biota from the dispersion and transfer of radionuclides in the environment provision of technical advice on regulatory applications for uranium mining and other radiation-related actions engagement with International Atomic Energy Agency technical programs.
The JobAs an APS5 Technical Officer Radiation Monitoring, you will:
manage the operational aspects of the branch's atmospheric radiation monitoring and mussel bioaccumulation monitoring programs undertake planning, procurement, fieldwork, staff training, data management, quality assurance, sample preparation and other activities in support of radiation monitoring programs provide support with planning and conducting non-routine radiation surveys of uranium mining and other sites in the Alligator Rivers Region assist with laboratory management activities and the maintenance and operation of laboratory-based radiation measurement equipment assist with the physical and chemical preparation of samples for radioactivity measurement assist with data analysis and the preparation of scientific reports and papers. Mandatory qualifications
A degree in science, or other qualification appropriate to the duties. EligibilityCitizenship - To be eligible for employment with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water you must be an Australian citizen.
Pre-employment Check - Your suitability for employment will be assessed through a pre-employment screening process. This process includes a requirement to undergo and satisfy a National Police Check, referee checks, character clearance and where required a pre-employment medical assessment, specified mandatory qualification(s) validation and a probation period of 6 months.
