The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) is Australia's national public media service, providing news, information, culture and entertainment for audiences of all ages, backgrounds and interests.
ABC Classic and ABC Jazz are the homes of classical and jazz music within the ABC ecosystem. Their output consists of three radio stations: ABC Classic, ABC Classic 2, and ABC Jazz. They have an extensive presence online, via ABC websites, the ABC listen app, and third-party platforms.
The ABC is now seeking to appoint a Head of ABC Classic and ABC Jazz to drive an exciting new vision for these key areas. This role will cement the ABC's position at the heart of the Australian music community, develop a cohesive, ambitious and distinctive editorial proposition for ABC's classical and jazz output, and grow audiences.
A newly created Senior Executive position, the Head of ABC Classic and ABC Jazz will report to the Director of Audio. They will be responsible for content development and delivery across stations and platforms, ensuring alignment with overarching ABC strategies, plans and targets. They will pioneer new content initiatives with external stakeholders across the classical music and jazz ecology, positioning the ABC as a key partner, and lead the annual commissioning process for ABC Classic and Jazz. They will oversee a diverse, high-performing content team, and develop strong working relationships with other ABC Departments.
The successful candidate will have senior executive experience in directing teams, determining strategic direction, and achieving organizational objectives including audience targets; they will bring confident budgeting, negotiation, and financial management skills.
While radio experience is an advantage, ABC is interested in approaches from knowledgeable candidates from across the industry with significant experience in music programming and commissioning, curation and editorialization, excellent personal networks, and forward-thinking ideas about media integration, content development, and enhancing the listener experience.
The deadline for applications is Monday 13 January 2025.
In line with our focus on diversity and inclusion, applications are strongly encouraged from Indigenous Australians, people from a range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds, people with disabilities, and LGBTQIA+ individuals. The ABC also aims to achieve a gender-balanced workforce.
