The principal functions of the Director of Public Prosecutions are to institute, prepare and conduct criminal cases on behalf of the Crown before the Supreme Courts and the Local Courts of the Northern Territory and the High Court of Australia.
The Office of Public Prosecutions invites applications from experienced and suitably qualified criminal lawyers, and those legal professionals who are eligible for admission as a barrister or solicitor of the High Court or of a Supreme Court of a State or Territory of Australia. The Office has a number of immediate vacancies at the P2 level and maintains a talent pool of successful applicants for future appointments.
These are challenging yet rewarding roles; your comprehensive knowledge of and experience in criminal law, practice and procedure, along with your advocacy and advanced communication skills, will ensure the delivery of a professional criminal prosecution service to the people of the Northern Territory.
Professional Level 2
Your primary objective will be to provide the people of the Northern Territory of Australia with an independent and professional criminal prosecution service.
Key Duties
The role involves providing quality legal advice to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and both internal and external stakeholders regarding summary prosecution cases. It includes conducting and appearing in criminal proceedings, such as sentences and breaches in the Supreme Court, as well as committal and summary hearings in the Local Court and Youth Court. The position requires managing complex criminal prosecutions and providing instructions for Supreme Court trials.
Essential Criteria
Admitted or eligible for admission as a barrister or solicitor of the High Court or a Supreme Court in Australia. Strong advocacy and communication skills, with experience in criminal law, including knowledge of Uniform Evidence Law. Ability to manage a legal practice in line with internal procedures and time standards. Strong organisational skills, the ability to work under pressure, and experience in prioritising workloads are essential.
