The Role and Team We have a fantastic opportunity for an Associate to join our Tax team in Sydney. Baker McKenzie's Tax Practice is ranked Band 1 in Tax by Chambers Global 2017 - 2021 and Band 1 in World Transfer Pricing 2018, 2020 and 2021. We act as trusted tax counsel to global multinational companies (both Australian and foreign) on their key tax risks and transactions. Baker McKenzie is growing its tax practice in Australia and is looking to recruit more associates into its Sydney based tax team.
Baker McKenzie offers associates the opportunity to work on all aspects of planning, transactions, and dispute resolution. We have an experienced and well-respected Sydney tax team of 3 partners and 15 senior associates and associates. We work in all areas of income tax (including corporate tax, funds taxation, and ultra-high net worth individuals and families), transfer pricing, GST, stamp duty, land tax, and employment taxes. We encourage our associates to develop a career path focused on their areas of interest and offer exposure to all areas of the law. Our ability to provide integrated tax advice to our clients sets us apart from other firms in the Australian market.
Most of our work is multijurisdictional, meaning you will be regularly working with our global legal team of 4,700 and clients located in Europe, Asia, or the Americas. Our multidisciplinary service offering means you will be regularly working in teams with lawyers from our Corporate, Employment, Banking & Finance, Litigation, Intellectual Property, and Real Estate Groups.
We have a strong culture of developing our own team. We provide both financial support and paid study leave for associates to undertake their LLM. We generally hire at the 2-4 year level of experience from Big 6 law firms and (with appropriate qualifications) Big 4 accounting firms.
We encourage travel. As an associate, senior associate, and partner in the Sydney office, you will be invited to participate in a number of regional and global training sessions to assist you during your career at Baker McKenzie with the aim of developing strong relationships with other Baker McKenzie lawyers and clients around the world.
Key Areas of Focus: Corporate tax with a focus on M&A transactions and corporate advisory;Transfer pricing (including economists and other appropriately qualified non-lawyers for these roles);Indirect taxes - with a focus on GST, stamp duty, and customs duty;Disputes;Ultra-high net worth individuals and families.What We're Looking For: 2-4 years' experience in Australian taxation law;Relevant experience in a top tier or leading international firm preferred;A strong client service orientation;Strong technical, drafting, and commercial skills;Business development aptitude, interest, and experience;A strong academic background;Excellent analytical, communication, and research skills;A commitment to high work standards and strong attention to detail;An ability to demonstrate initiative and proactivity;An ability to develop strong relationships with clients and to take responsibility for this relationship;An ability to work well in a team environment (including across Australian offices and internationally);A willingness to learn; andA willingness to develop others through mentoring and sharing experiences.About the Firm At Baker McKenzie, we are different in the way we think, work, and behave.
