This is an exciting career development position in which the successful candidate will conduct research, teach undergraduate courses, and receive mentoring to apply for external funds.Position overviewThe successful candidate will join the project 'Why Monarchy Endures.
Answers from the Ancient Mediterranean World', led by Associate Professor Caillan Davenport and funded by an Australian Research Council Future Fellowship (FT2401000701).
The project is particularly seeking a scholar with expertise in the politics and government of the eastern Mediterranean world (c. 1200 BCE-600 CE) in regions such as Greece, Anatolia, Egypt, and/or Persia.The appointee will spend 50% of their time engaged in research for the project as well as its wider intellectual and knowledge translation activities.
This includes associate supervision of PhD and Honours students.
The successful candidate will receive funding to present their research at national and international conferences and be supported to apply for Australian Research Council grants, such as a Discovery Early Career Researcher Award or a Future Fellowship.The other 50% of the appointee's time will be devoted to education and service in the Centre for Classical Studies.
They will possess the necessary skills, flexibility, and collegiality to teach broadly across all three majors: Ancient Greek, Latin, and Classical Studies (history, culture, and literature in English translation).
In Classical Studies, they will teach CLAS2014: Democrats, Tyrants, and Emperors: The Art of Government in the Ancient Mediterranean in collaboration with A/Prof.
Davenport, and contribute to other courses, such as CLAS1006: Ancient Greece: History, Culture, and Society, and CLAS3003: Faith and Belief in Ancient Greece and Rome.College overviewThe ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) is one of seven Colleges at ANU.
The College, which is structured into two main research schools, offers degrees in more than 20 discipline areas and excels in research across the creative arts, humanities and social sciences.
The College has a substantial international research presence and is a major source of national policy advice.
Our academic staff are internationally recognised for their research, and 57 are members of the Australian Academy of the Humanities, the Academy of the Social Sciences of Australia, or both.
