Assistant Secretary, Industry, Innovation, Science & Communications BranchDepartment of the Prime Minister and Cabinet
Full time
The Industry, Infrastructure and Environment Division offers interesting work on issues that matter to business and communities. The content is diverse, the work is hard and fast but meaningful, and the people and culture are great. Our responsibilities are wide ranging from energy and climate change; infrastructure investment and transport policy; communications and the arts; agriculture and regional policy; industry and science; and water and the environment. Across these issues, we collaborate with other Commonwealth agencies to analyze and advise on policy and programs, as well as chaperoning Budget and Cabinet processes and the legislative and Parliamentary activities of our line agencies.
We ensure the Prime Minister and the Cabinet have the benefit of clear and candid advice and a diversity of perspectives, so policy choices are well informed and able to be communicated effectively and delivered efficiently. We pride ourselves on having exceptionally strong relationships and networks, getting things done, making a difference and focusing on what matters most.
What you'll be doing We are looking for an experienced SES Band 1 or a high-performing Executive Level 2 with exceptional leadership, stakeholder engagement and diverse policy skills to fill the position of Assistant Secretary, Industry, Innovation, Science and Communications Branch within the Industry, Infrastructure and Environment Division (II&E). The successful candidate will lead a branch with responsibility for providing advice to the Prime Minister and the Cabinet on policy issues spanning the industry, science, communications and arts policy domains. Working hand-in-glove with colleagues across PM&C, other central agencies and the portfolio agencies we shadow, you will bring whole-of-government and whole-of-economy perspectives to the role, driving a coordinated and coherent approach supported by robust, evidence-based and nuanced advice.
As Assistant Secretary, you will also form an integral part of the senior leadership team of the Division, with shared responsibility for supporting an inclusive and staff-centric approach to wellbeing, and cultivating the cohesive and productive culture that sits at the core of II&E's identity.
This advertisement may also be used to fill other Assistant Secretary roles within the Division. A merit pool may be established and used to fill the same or similar vacancies for 18 months from the date of advertising.
Why you're the ideal candidate Our ideal candidate will have extensive experience in Government and the ability to navigate Government processes confidently and sensitively. To be successful, you will have experience that supports strong leadership and management necessary to enable staff within the Industry, Innovation, Science and Communications Branch to deliver outcomes with credibility and integrity.
The successful candidate will possess the ability to drive the implementation of priorities, identify and analyze new and emerging policy issues, and understand PM&C's role in setting and delivering policy directions.
You will be an experienced leader with excellent influencing and negotiation skills, who is adept at building relationships across the public service, community sector, industry, academia, and Ministers' offices.
The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker, resilient and forward-looking with strong personal drive and integrity, with the ability to develop innovative solutions to problems and apply sound judgment to provide well-rounded advice to Government. You will have exceptional capacity to operate under extreme pressure and corresponding accountability for those decisions made.
You do not need experience in Industry, Innovation, Science and Communications issues, or a Central Agency background, however experience across a broad range of government policy areas would be welcome.
