National Museum of Australia – Canberra ACTBusiness unit or Division purposeThe Museum has an exciting opportunity for an experienced lawyer to undertake the duties of Assistant Manager, Legal.This role sits within the Governance and Legal Services Business Unit within the Corporate Division. The Corporate Division is essential in supporting the Museum's operations and ensuring the seamless delivery of exceptional experiences for internal stakeholders, visiting audiences, and employees.You will be working in a busy team whose functions encompass legal services, procurement, governance, audience research, and executive support. The role offers a suitable person the chance to be deeply engaged in the strategy and activities of the whole Museum, with a program of work delivered in Canberra, across Australia, and internationally.Role purposeThe role would suit an experienced lawyer interested in a wide range of in-house counsel work. The position reports directly to the Head, Governance and Legal Services, and works with all Business Units across the Museum to ensure compliance with legal, procurement, and governance requirements. There is flexibility to be creative in how to best engage with clients, with a strong focus on uplifting internal capability and understanding of legal issues.The key duties of the position include:As Assistant Manager, Legal Services, you will have the opportunity to:advise on an exciting and broad range of contractual and procurement activities such as exhibition contracts, loan agreements, and collection acquisitionsassist and support the Museum subject matter experts by researching and investigating unique issues relating to historical collections, such as provenance and cultural heritage lawsprovide legal advice on complex and sensitive matters across all the Museum business units, including employment issues, copyright and IP matters, privacy queries, and freedom of information requestscollaborate and work closely with the Museum curators, project managers, external stakeholders, and members of the Museum's Executive and Council to achieve quality outcomes for the Museumprovide guidance on the Museum's enabling legislation, statutory compliance, governance, and policy development to support the strategic and operational functions of the Museumlead activities to build legal awareness across the Museum by developing training, guidance, and educative materialEligibilitySkills, experience and qualificationsEssential:Have a law degree from an Australian tertiary institution or equivalent and be admitted as a solicitor in the Australian Capital Territory (current practising certificate not essential)Experience in providing practical legal advice across a broad range of subject areasSound judgement and decision-making skillsExcellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skillsAbility to provide timely, practical, and accurate advice with minimal supervisionEligibilityTo be eligible to apply for this vacancy, applicants must:be an Australian citizenundergo a number of pre-employment checks, including a police record checkhold or be eligible to hold a security clearance at the level specified in the position descriptionNotesThe Museum is committed to building an inclusive and culturally diverse workforce.
