We are seeking an Assistant editor, opinion to Commission, edit and produce copy for the opinion section of the Guardian Australia site.
Key responsibilities and accountabilities Assist the opinion editor and deputy editor in producing lively, varied, talked-about content that is interesting and important Edit and sub pieces swiftly and accurately, including writing lively, punchy headlines and standfirsts Generate comment ideas for the whole of Guardian Australia that are intelligent, original and news-reactive Make informed decisions about unsolicited offers, based on content, topicality, quality and provenance Nurture relationships with regular contributors and build relationships with new ones Engage in the comment threads and look out for interesting debates and conversations that may yield opinion pieces Find new talent, especially from diverse writers, including people who have not previously written on mainstream media platforms Recognise any potential legal problems and liaise with the legal department when necessary Deputise for the opinion editor and deputy opinion editor as required Knowledge and experience Proven experience in journalism, preferably in dealing with opinion pieces and commissioning writers Wide knowledge of and interest in current affairs, domestically and internationally, especially in an Australian context Familiarity with the issues that prompt debate within Guardian Australia's readership Clear understanding of the purpose and aims of Guardian Australia Understanding of the demands of a daily website Skills / behaviours Able to commission and edit compelling and accurate copy to tight deadlines Imaginative and able to work independently Strong ability to generate ideas and motivate others High attention to detail Organisation, planning and time-management skills Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills Collaborative team player Open to feedback and correction Resilient and comfortable working under pressure About working at Guardian Australia… Employee assistance program (EAP) to support employee wellbeing Dedicated diversity and inclusion employee groups, action plans (including our Reconciliation Action Plan ) and cultural competency training For more information please view the full job description here.
