Assistant Director Student and Teacher Engagement$110,115 - $120,025 + 15.4% superannuationThe Education Team sits within the Research and Education Group.
Through the AIATSIS Education Strategy, the Education team strives to influence what children learn at school about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australia and support educators to teach confidently.
The key activities the team undertakes are developing and delivering culturally responsive professional learning for teachers, creating culturally safe curriculum resources mapped onto the Australian Curriculum, and developing a cutting-edge schools program.About the RoleThe Assistant Director Student and Teacher Engagement will lead the development and implementation of an AIATSIS Education schools program.
They will also oversee the development and delivery of professional learning workshops and resources for educators around culturally responsive teaching.
The Assistant Director Student and Teacher Engagement will manage a small team that will initiate and develop these projects as well engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and educational stakeholders, including students and teachers nationally.Key Responsibilities:Lead the development and delivery of a cutting-edge schools program grounded in truth-telling, including developing a world-leading, evidence-based schools program to be available from day one of Ngurra: The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Precinct.Lead the development and delivery of culturally responsive professional learning for educators.Provide leadership within the team, contributing to strategic direction and planning as well as supervising, mentoring, and coaching others.Take responsibility for the performance and outputs of the team.Strategically manage projects, setting priorities, establishing work plans, allocating resources, and evaluating project outcomes.Communicate effectively to build partnerships and productive relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, organisations, and peoples, and with academic, government and community stakeholders.Work effectively at the executive level of the Australian Public Service.Cultural CapabilityRoles at AIATSIS require candidates to understand the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and proven culturally appropriate engagement and communications skills.
The nature of this role requires the candidate to consistently demonstrate the following specific cultural capabilities:Understand Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander business within the agency and the outcomes the agency is responsible for delivering.Understand the current issues facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with regard to Indigenous language and the historical context of these issues.Have the ability to communicate respectfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stakeholders, clients and colleagues.Have the capability to privilege Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' voices, experiences and perspectives in their work.AIATSIS embodies Yindyamarra in everything we do.Our Ideal CandidateTo be successful in this role, you will have well-developed stakeholder engagement skills with a strong understanding and experience in Indigenous education within a school/educational institution, cultural institution or community organisation.
You will come with the following skills, experience and attributes:Demonstrated and extensive knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education.Proven ability to lead educational programs, including a strong track record of innovative approaches and pedagogy related to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education.Strong leadership and management skills, including the ability to supervise and motivate staff, as well as building team capacity through coaching, performance feedback and management.Proven ability to manage change, competing priorities and strategic directions, with the ability to deliver high quality projects and outcomes, as well as the ability to deal with uncertainty positively and flexibly.Extensive experience engaging, collaborating, negotiating and maintaining positive relationships with key stakeholders, both internal and external, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to achieve the goals of the program and organisation.Experience providing analysis, guidance and briefing on complex matters as well as the ability to develop policy and procedures.Excellent organisational skills and the ability to participate in a diverse work program with competing priorities.Excellent communication (written and oral) skills.Working with Vulnerable Persons (WWVP) registration or willingness to attain one.Tertiary qualifications in Education or a related field are highly desirable as is teaching experience.
Equivalent relevant skills and experience will be recognised.
Tertiary qualifications in Indigenous studies, fine arts, cultural heritage, museum, or curatorial studies or a related field are highly desirable.
