Who we are 
ABARES - the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences - is the research arm of the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. We provide professionally independent, high-quality research, analysis, forecasting and statistics on portfolio industries, to government and private sector decision-makers. The bureau also provides integrated socio-economic and biophysical analysis to address the policy issues facing Australia's primary industries.

ABARES has several vacancies at the EL1 level (Assistant Director - Scientist). As Assistant Directors, you will be established in your scientific career, experienced in or with the potential to lead small teams and collaborate widely, and proactive in planning and undertaking research. We are seeking to fill roles that will work on one or more of the following:

• Communicating the state and condition, trend over time, and sustainable management of natural resources and dependent industries.
• Their protection from biosecurity threats.
• The role of social systems.

The Jobs
The duties of the role will depend on the program you are working in but will include:

• developing and leading scientific projects and synthesising, analysing, interpreting and communicating data and research findings for government and industry
• initiating and leading collaboration with scientists, policy advisers and researchers from other disciplines to provide integrated research and advice 
• presenting scientific research and analysis to diverse audiences by varied means
• anticipating and providing scientific advice and information to the ABARES Executive, policy advisers in government, industry and the public on issues associated with Australia's agriculture, fisheries, forestry, biosecurity and/or natural resource sectors
• representing ABARES to industry, government and research stakeholders at meetings, conferences and a range of public forums, and managing stakeholder relationships
• building teams and mentoring junior staff to achieve their development goals.

Please note that this recruitment process will be used to fill multiple vacancies in the division and that the roles may be able to be performed from any of the locations listed above. The merit pool established through this selection process, which is valid for a period of eighteen months from the date the vacancy was advertised in the Public Service Gazette, may also be used to fill future vacancies in the division where the duties are of a similar nature.

What we are looking for Knowledge and experience
The successful applicants will be able to demonstrate: 

• at least five years of experience in a relevant scientific area, including but not limited to marine or terrestrial ecology, land, forest or marine resource assessment, agronomy or agriculture, climate, biosecurity surveillance and pest and disease eradication or social science
• experience in undertaking scientific analyses applicable to government, industry or resource management agencies, and in interpreting and advising on real-world problems
• a history of successful project management and delivery.

Mandatory qualifications
Relevant tertiary qualifications in an appropriate science discipline (e.g. agricultural science, environmental science, natural resource management, forest science, fisheries science, climate science, quantitative sciences or social sciences) and/or qualifications with strong spatial or mathematical components. Honours or postgraduate qualifications would be an advantage.
