EL1 Assistant Director, Regulatory Compliance– Environmental Regulation non-ongoing (6 months) Fixed-term contract Airport Environment Branch (AEB) within the department's Domestic Aviation and Reform Division is responsible for regulating environmental management at leased federal airports, and delivering the department's Per- and Poly-fluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Airports Investigation Program (the Program) through its PFAS Taskforce.Core ResponsibilitiesEstablish and document scope and processes of a new regulatory compliance function, consulting widely and working collaboratively both within the team, across the division and with external stakeholders.
Promoting and applying consistent and accurate interpretation and application of the environmental aspect of legislation, includingAirports Act 1996 (with primary responsibility for Part 6) Airports (Environmental Protection) Regulations 1997 (primary responsibility) Airports Regulations 2024 (secondary responsibility) Airports (Building Control) Regulations 1996 (secondary responsibility).
Supervise a stocktake of existing regulatory compliance actions and develop a forward plan for further actions, including potential timing and resourcing.
Monitoring compliance and evaluating regulatory actions, with a focus on continual improvement of our regulatory compliance function.Provide advice and support to the team on strategic and technical airport environmental regulation issues.Interpret and apply legislation to support complex, sound, and timely decisions.Enforce regulatory compliance on complex issues while engaging consistently and appropriately with risk.Apply critical and strategic thinking to the review of regulations, new and existing guidelines and procedures to inform compliance and policy decision making and support the Delegate in statutory reviews.
Provide proactive technical input to inform policy and regulatory matters to maintain high quality, consistent Airport Environment Officer network outcomes.Manage annual Airport Environment Report Coordination.Provide accurate, nuanced and strategic advice on compliance and enforcement matters to stakeholders (Airport Building Controllers, Airport Environment Officers, Airport Lessee Companies, etc.)

Liaise with Airport Environment Officers to source expert input to inform compliance actions, and source broader legal and other technical support for section priorities.
Necessary skills, qualifications and experienceQualifications in Environmental Science, a similar environmental discipline or Law.
In some circumstances, relevant work experience in a regulatory compliance or enforcement role at the EL1 level may be sufficient.Experience in a regulatory enforcement or compliance role.Assess environmentally technical operations, reports and correspondence and provide advice and support on technical and complex environmental and legal matters.
