Assistant Director – Policy, Program and Regulatory (multiple roles) We are the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. The Department enforces laws relating to the protection of the environment and biodiversity, import and export of wildlife, fuel quality and greenhouse gas storage. Job overview
As an Assistant Director within our Policy, Program or Regulatory functions, you will be required to undertake work that is very complex or sensitive within a changing environment. You will exercise sound decision making and judgement to produce high level advice; engage in complex problem solving and issues management; and undertake detailed or sensitive work that may impact on strategic, political or operational outcomes for the department.
There are multiple vacancies for Assistant Directors in our policy, program and regulatory functions across several divisions and this job advertisement will be used to fill immediate and future vacancies. The key duties of the position will vary depending on the specialist area of the role.
Duties may include, but are not limited to:
Lead high performing teams to achieve results in line with departmental objectives.
Provide specialist, expert advice on complex areas of policy, program or regulatory frameworks.
Communicate and make decisions that are based on professional judgement, evaluating risks in the context of a complex and changing environment.
Manage complex issues with a focus on research and analysis.
Apply comprehensive work knowledge, precedent and established legislation, policy, procedures and guidelines to situations involving a high level of complexity and sensitivity which require considerable interpretation and analysis.
Develop and actively manage key internal and external relationships, including collaborating with key stakeholders and representing and explaining agency views in various forums.
Promote and encourage quality decision making within the department.

Experience in developing strategic advice on policy, program or regulatory issues in a government agency.
The ability to lead a high performing and inclusive team.
An ability to develop, maintain and leverage productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Well-developed communication skills, including the ability to negotiate outcomes and deliver high quality written advice on complex and sensitive issues to diverse audiences.
The ability to exercise judgement, operate independently and manage competing priorities in a changing environment.
Highly developed research and analysis skills backed by a desire to generate new ideas, approaches and strategies that align with the department's objectives.
Some roles may have a strong involvement in issues relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The successful applicants for these roles must demonstrate an awareness of the issues affecting Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander People and an ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander People.
Qualifications in public policy, science, law, economics, project management, natural resource management, engineering, environmental or biological science, computer science, information technology, statistics or a related field.
Eligibility and other requirements
Citizenship: You must be an Australian citizen.
Security Clearance: Ability to obtain and maintain a Baseline, Negative Vetting 1 , or Negative Vetting 2 security clearance. Security clearance requirements will vary depending on position.
Pre-employment Check: DCCEEW must be satisfied that successful applicants are of suitable character which is assessed through a pre-employment screening process. This process includes a national police check, referee checks, and a pre-employment medical assessment.
Probation: A probationary period of six (6) months will apply to any new engagement to the APS.
