$110,115 - $120,025 +15.4% superannuationThe AIATSIS Centre for Australian Languages (ACAL) sits within the Research and Education Group and undertakes community-based research and projects with the aim of supporting the active practice and strengthening of Indigenous languages. This includes projects to support language reawakening through access to archival materials, the documentation of languages supporting the production of materials such as dictionaries and assisting communities in achieving these goals. Our work is strongly community focused and supports Indigenous control of their languages and associated data. We take a national approach to understanding the situation and status of Indigenous languages and drawing on this we provide advice to governments on all aspects of language policy, projects and support.About the RoleThe Assistant Director will oversee the development and management of projects to support the strengthening of Indigenous Australian languages. They will manage a small team that will initiate and develop projects, engage with communities and stakeholders, produce and maintain useful resources, hold forums and events, and develop innovative communication and publication outputs and report on outcomes.The Assistant Director will contribute to the achievement of AIATSIS goals and objectives as a key member of the Research and Education leadership team.Key Responsibilities:Strategically manage projects, set priorities, establish work plans, allocate resources, and evaluate project outcomes.Provide leadership within the team, contributing to strategic direction and planning as well as supervising, mentoring, and coaching others.Oversee the provision of secretariat support to committees.Communicate effectively to build partnerships and productive relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, organisations, and peoples, and with academic, government, and community stakeholders.Report to AIATSIS governance committees, partner organisations, government departments, and other parties on the progress and results of projects.Take responsibility for a range of project outputs, including submissions, conference papers, and alternative modes of communicating research and information.Supervise and manage staff, building team capacity through coaching, performance feedback and management, and creating career development opportunities.Cultural Capability:Roles at AIATSIS require candidates to understand the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and proven culturally appropriate engagement and communications skills. You will come with the following skills, experience, and attributes:Demonstrated ability to provide leadership, build partnerships, and develop productive relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, organisations, and peoples.Proven ability to develop and maintain successful relationships with academic, government, and community stakeholders.Proven ability to strategically manage complex projects, set priorities, establish work plans, allocate resources, and evaluate project outcomes, and contribute to team planning, decisions, and development.Strong leadership and management skills, including the ability to supervise, inspire, and motivate staff, as well as building team capacity through coaching, performance feedback and management, and creating career development opportunities.Experience communicating with influence, in writing and verbally, in order to advise, liaise, and effectively and respectfully negotiate with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.Demonstrated ability to undertake research and provide analysis, guidance, briefing, and reporting on complex matters as well as the ability to develop internal processes and procedures.Suitable qualifications such as a postgraduate qualification or currently completing a postgraduate degree or be able to demonstrate equivalent research experience and/or work experience in research and/or research management.Technical Requirements:Ability to manage a team to deliver quality, impactful projects, and communicate results effectively and innovatively.Ability to provide leadership within a team, including supervising and mentoring others.A strong interest in Australian Indigenous languages and/or a willingness to learn.Ability to communicate comfortably and effectively with a wide range of stakeholders of all levels.Excellent organisational skills and the ability to participate in a diverse work program with competing priorities.High level written communication skills.Ability to identify innovations and ideas in your work and contribute to team planning and decisions.Specialist Skills:Language teaching and/or resource development.Language work, including management of language programs.Ability to travel to coordinate on-country co-design workshops for the National Indigenous Languages Survey.What We Offer:We understand that you will work best when you have a healthy work-life balance and can attend to your family commitments.
