About the GroupThe purpose of the Research and Education Group (REG) is to define, lead, produce, share and support cutting edge research and learning by, with, and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.About the Program AreaThe Indigenous Country and Policy (ICP) Program sits within the Research and Education Group. The ICP team has the lead in developing and coordinating a new national report on the situation and status of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and heritage. As a multistage project, the Situation and Status of Indigenous Cultures and Heritage (SSICH) is a complex project that aims to provide a comprehensive and dynamic insight into the vitality of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. This project is being developed with the view to enable more effective policy making for advancing and supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people's cultural aspirations through providing publicly available advice on the status and outcomes of the state of Indigenous culture and heritage.About the RoleUnder legislation, the Australian Institute for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) is responsible for providing "advice to the Commonwealth on the Situation and Status of Indigenous Culture and Heritage (SSICH)". The Assistant Director will be instrumental in the creation of this report and supporting body of work. This position reports to the Director, Research Policy, and Ethics. The key duties of the position include:lead a small team to develop and implement a framework for the delivery of the SSICH.manage program governance. establish a panel of experts to oversee the development and finalisation of the SSICH.provide reports on program deliverables to senior management and Council as required. manage ongoing engagement with staff, vendors, and other program stakeholders. work closely with all areas of AIATSIS, particularly the Research and Education Group.  Cultural capabilityThis EL1 role is in an important leadership position in the stewardship of the SSICH. As such, it incorporates aspects from each of the Knowing, Doing and Being sections of the Cultural Capabilities Framework. understands Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander business within the agency and the outcomes the agency is responsible for delivering. (Knowing) works in genuine partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to achieve shared outcomes. (Doing) communicates respectfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stakeholders, clients, and colleagues. (Doing)has an authentic and respectful interest in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, policy, and implementation matters. (Being)Our ideal candidateThe ideal candidate will come with the skills, experience and attributes shown below:proven ability to sensitively engage with, and demonstrate an understanding of, clients who are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, including understanding Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property Rights and the interests of Indigenous peoples. demonstrated experience in project management including delivery of project objectives and drafting and maintaining project documentation. strong liaison, interpersonal, and communication skills, including the ability to build relationships across a range of professional and disciplinary areas. demonstrated ability to manage change, competing priorities and strategic directions, with the ability to deliver high quality projects and outcomes.ability to deal with uncertainty positively and flexibly.
