Country & PolicyThis is an Affirmative Measures opportunityThis position will be filled using the Affirmative Measure provision, which allows for thetargeted recruitment of Indigenous Australians into the Australian Public Service. Thevacancy is only open to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. The filling of thisemployment opportunity is intended to constitute an Affirmative Measure under section 8(1)of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975.

We create opportunities for people the worldover to engage with and be transformed by the knowledge, the culture, and the story ofAustralia's Indigenous peoples. We are Australia's national institution for leadership inAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander research.
What we doWe care for a priceless collection, including films, photographs, video, and audio recordingsas well as the world's largest collection of printed and other resource materials forAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander studies. We undertake and encourage scholarly,ethical, community-based research in a variety of sectors, including health, native title,languages, and education. Our publishing house, Aboriginal Studies Press, regularlypublishes outstanding writing that promotes Australian Indigenous cultures.Our activities affirm and raise awareness of the richness and diversity of Aboriginal andTorres Strait Islander cultures and histories.
Our functions are established under the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait
These functions are to:• provide access to a national collection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
culture and heritage.• use that national collection to strengthen and promote knowledge and
understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and heritage.• provide leadership in the fields of:
? Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander research; and? activities relating to collections associated with Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander peoples; and use (including use for research) of that nationalcollection and other collections containing Aboriginal and Torres StraitIslander culture and heritage.
• lead and promote collaborations and partnerships among the academic,research, non-government, business and government sectors andAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in support of the otherfunctions of the Institute.
• provide advice to the Commonwealth on the situation and status of Aboriginaland Torres Strait Islander culture and heritage.

About the GroupThe purpose of the Research and Education Group (REG) is to define, lead, produce, share andsupport cutting edge research and learning by, with, and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait
About the Program AreaThe Indigenous Country and Policy (ICP) Program sits within the Research and EducationGroup. The ICP team has the lead in developing and coordinating a new national report on thesituation and status of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and heritage. As amultistage project, the Situation and Status of Indigenous Cultures and Heritage (SSICH) is acomplex project that aims to provide a comprehensive and dynamic insight into the vitality ofAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. This project is being developed with the view toenable more effective policy making for advancing and supporting Aboriginal and Torres StraitIslander people's cultural aspirations through providing publicly available advice on the statusand outcomes of the state of Indigenous culture and heritage.
About the RoleUnder legislation, the Australian Institute for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies(AIATSIS) is responsible for providing "advice to the Commonwealth on the Situation andStatus of Indigenous Culture and Heritage (SSICH)". The Assistant Director will be instrumentalin the creation of this report and supporting body of work. This position reports to the Director,Research Policy, and Ethics.Key responsibilities of the role include:
• lead a small team to develop and implement a framework for the delivery of the SSICH.• manage program governance.• establish a panel of experts to oversee the development and finalisation of the SSICH.• provide reports on program deliverables to senior management and Council as required.• manage ongoing engagement with staff, vendors, and other program stakeholders.• work closely with all areas of AIATSIS, particularly the Research and Education Group.
This EL1 role is in an important leadership position in the stewardship of the SSICH. As such, itincorporates aspects from each of the Knowing, Doing and Being sections of the CulturalCapabilities Framework.
• understands Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander business within the agency and theoutcomes the agency is responsible for delivering. (Knowing)

• proven ability to sensitively engage with, and demonstrate an understanding of, clientswho are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, including understanding IndigenousCultural and Intellectual Property Rights and the interests of Indigenous peoples.
• demonstrated experience in project management including delivery of project objectivesand drafting and maintaining project documentation.
• strong liaison, interpersonal, and communication skills, including the ability to buildrelationships across a range of professional and disciplinary areas.
• demonstrated ability to manage change, competing priorities and strategic directions,with the ability to deliver high quality projects and outcomes.
