Primary Objective As a key member of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Executive, the role will operate at strategic and operational levels and will play a critical role in the overall strategy, leadership and performance of the DPP. The position will provide high level strategic, legal, policy and business advice and decision making across a range of matters; assist the Director in the corporate strategic leadership and efficient day-to-day running of the office, including management of human and financial resources across the Northern Territory. Context statement The DPP operates independently within the Attorney-General's Department (AGD). Key duties and responsibilities 1. Lead and prepare the office's response to complex submissions, cabinet submissions and law reform enquiries, prepare submissions on legislative changes, law reform, policy and high-level Executive correspondence. 2. Develop and maintain high level relationships with colleagues across government, the non-government sector, private practice law firms, Legal Aid and aboriginal legal organisations to facilitate strong working relationships across agencies. 3. Manage the DPP's human and financial resources, including budget management, financial sustainability, staff development and capability building. 4. Lead the development and implementation of strategic projects to improve the business and operational performance of the DPP, including quality assurance for digital case management and evidence management systems. 5. Provide high quality legal policy advice on criminal justice issues to AGD, NTLAC, Police and other stakeholders. 6. Represent the Director of Public Prosecutions at high level meetings. 7. Oversee the compiling of statistics, selection reports and drafting and editing of the Annual Report. Selection Criteria Essential 1. Extensive experience in researching, analysing and preparing complex correspondence in a legal environment. 2. Demonstrated high level of contemporary leadership and management skills, conflict resolution skills and proven ability to effectively represent a government agency at a senior executive level. 3. Well-developed cross-cultural awareness skills together with a sound understanding of Indigenous issues relevant to prosecutions in the Northern Territory. 4. Excellent oral and written communication skills as well as the ability to negotiate and communicate to make sound, well-informed decisions and influence outcomes. 5. High level strategic, conceptual, analytical and creative skills, including an ability to understand the political, social, economic and organisational environments and integrate this knowledge into advice. 6. Eligibility for admission as a legal practitioner in the Northern Territory. 7. High level knowledge of sound business management principles and practices inherent in the provision of corporate and business services in a legal practice. 8. A thorough understanding of Government Financial Systems, including Legislative and Statutory policies and procedures relating to budget management, procurement and contract management or the ability to quickly acquire these. 9. Ability to lead change, influence decisions and encourage others to implement innovative and more effective work procedures, practices and processes. 10. Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of strategic planning, strategic change management, resource allocation, priority establishment and project management and evaluation. 11. Hold (or have the capacity to obtain) a current Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card). Desirable 1. Understanding of criminal justice issues impacting the Northern Territory.
