About the Department & Roles On 5 August 2021, the Australian Government announced an investment of $378.6 million over five years for a Territories Stolen Generations Redress Scheme to help the Stolen Generations heal the trauma from being forcibly removed from their family.
The Scheme requires a group of Independent Assessors who will individually consider the applications for redress, using the Scheme's guidelines to determine when an applicant is eligible, make determinations to the Delegate regarding eligibility, conduct reviews as required and, as a group, ensure outcomes are as consistent as possible. Scheme staff will assist the Independent Assessors to ensure they have the best available information to make an informed determination.
Key Duties consider whether applicants are eligible for redress under the eligibility criteriause sound and objective judgement to understand the circumstances of each case and apply the internal assessment guidelinesmake clear, well-reasoned and timely decisions in complex situations that have a significant impact on applicantsconduct internal reviews of decisions as required, andescalate sensitive and/or complex cases as required.Essential Attributes / Skills / Experience Demonstrated significant experience at senior levels working across community and/or government sector/s in areas like case management, health and wellbeing including intergenerational trauma, family services, disability, social welfare, criminal justice and aged care.Demonstrated cultural competency, specifically in relation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.Demonstrated ability to convey complex information in a clear and concise manner.Demonstrated initiative, be self-motivated, flexible, responsive and solutions-focused.Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team, be flexible, adaptable, and comfortable with a changing working environmentAvailability to work on an ad-hoc/casual basis noting the Scheme will be on hold four weeks of every year for Christmas, Easter and assorted public holidays.Mandatory requirements A commitment to working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples Demonstrated understanding of the impact of colonisation and forced removals on Indigenous social and emotional well-being.Significant experience in communicating sensitively and respectfully, to be able to provide a service to Aboriginal people who have been affected by these past experiences.Demonstrated high level of cultural capability or the ability to develop understanding the cultural context and the impacts of past events, policies and programs.Baseline security clearance or the ability to gain obtain and maintain.Have a home/business office to work from with stable internet connection that has sufficient broadband to video conference.Potential Independent Assessors must provide full disclosure of any actual, potential, or perceived conflicts of interest, personal and/or professional, both prior to being appointed and at any time afterwards. This is to ensure fairness, transparency and public trust in the Scheme.Be fully COVID-19 vaccinated for instances of needing to travel. In order to minimise the risks of the spread of COVID-19 to our stakeholders and communities, and to minimise risks to the Independent Assessors, the NIAA requires full vaccination for official travel. NIAA recognise that travelling often adds additional risk of exposure and wants to minimise that risk as much as possible.
