Full time As an EL2 Deputy General Counsel you will perform an important leadership role.
You will be responsible for influencing and developing strategies, policies, priorities and operational practices in support of ASD objectives based on your high level decision making and judgement.
As an EL2 Deputy General Counsel you will work with significant independence.
You will lead a team to deliver complex legal advice to support sensitive projects that have strategic, political and operational significance.
You will have experience in one or more of the following subject areas: Cyber security, commercial or contract law.
International, military, operational or national security law.
Administrative, employment law or dispute resolution.
You will initiate, establish and maintain strong relationships with a broad network of stakeholders internally and externally and will have the ability to recognise shared agendas and work toward mutually beneficial outcomes.
You will provide strategic advice to senior management and stakeholders.
You will anticipate and establish priorities and identify and manage legal risk.
You will be innovative, solution focused and promote continuous improvement.
An EL2 Deputy General Counsel leads a team, plans and manages staff, and exercises associated people and financial responsibilities.
You will provide strategic direction to your team, including developing business plans, practices and priorities.
You will monitor work flow and performance.
You will develop, coach and review individual, team and business performance, and will identify opportunities for building team capability and continuous improvement.
You will set work aligned with strategic objectives and communicate expected outcomes.
As an EL2 Deputy General Counsel, you will: Be responsible for the administration of your team, including ensuring all members of the team comply with the administration expectations of the General Counsel Branch and ASD's governance requirements.
Prepare briefing material, submissions, correspondence, reports, legal documents and legal-related policy including for the Director-General of ASD and other ASD senior executives.
Analyse very complex legal issues and provide high quality and timely legal advice, on a range of matters in a national security context.
Allocate and review the work of your team, mentoring and developing junior lawyers.
Identify and integrate strategic input in the development of policy and legislation affecting ASD.
Work collaboratively as a member of General Counsel Branch's leadership team, setting and promoting strategic direction and demonstrating core values of ASD and the Commonwealth public service.
Communicate effectively to develop and foster productive working relationships with all stakeholders, including external legal providers and counsel.

General Counsel Branch within the Legal, Compliance and Strategy Division is a specialist in-house legal practice that supports ASD's mission by advising on the management of legal risk.

General Counsel Branch has legal officers in locations around Australia and comprises teams advising on a range of legal practice areas including employment law, commercial law, national security and intelligence law, international law, legislation reform and legal policy.
