Position OverviewThe Research Librarian works as part of the Federal Court of Australia Library Network to provide a high-quality library and information service to Judges and staff of the Federal Court of Australia (FCA), Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (FCFCOA) and National Native Title Tribunal (NNTT).

Reporting to the Manager, Library & Information Services, NSW & ACT, the Research Librarian's primary responsibility is to provide a high-level reference and research services to Judges and staff.

The Research Librarian educates Judges and staff about library services and resources, through presentations and learning programs.

The Research Librarian actively promotes the Library and expands the awareness and use of the resources available.

The Research Librarian assists the Manager, Library & Information Services, NSW & ACT, with the development of the library collection to ensure it meets the needs of NSW & ACT users.

The Research Librarian assists with the Library's current awareness publications.

The Research Librarian works collaboratively with the Library team sharing expertise to support team priorities and deliverables in alignment with the Library team's goals.

Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and attention to detail are essential in this role.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

Provide high-level reference and research services to Judges and staff.

Actively engage with the library's customers to understand their needs and provide a responsive service.

Develop and maintain a high level of expertise across a range of legal research tools, in print and online formats.

Provide professional responses to legal research enquiries, informed by analysing and evaluating the legal issues involved.

Provide training and support to Judges and staff.

Contribute to the development of, and participate in, activities that promote greater understanding and increased use of library services.

Assist in collection development and indexing for current awareness publications.

Qualification RequirementsDegree and/or postgraduate qualification which qualifies for professional membership of the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Occasional travel may be required to interstate locations.

Selection Criteria

Demonstrated ability to work productively and collaboratively as part of a team delivering timely and high-quality information services and promoting the library and its services.

Demonstrated ability to understand and apply research methodology to locate and evaluate results to meet the information needs of library customers.

Demonstrated ability to clearly impart information and deliver training, in both individual and group settings.

High-level interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to communicate (oral and written) and negotiate effectively with a range of stakeholders at all levels, maintaining a high level of discretion in relation to enquiries.

Library experience preferably within a legal environment and demonstrated knowledge of legal materials and resources both in print and online.

EligibilityEmployment with the Court is subject to the conditions prescribed in the Public Service Act 1999, and the following:

Australian citizenship – the successful applicant must hold Australian citizenship.

Security and character clearance – the successful applicant must satisfy a Police Records Check and may also be required to complete security clearances during the course of their employment.

Successful applicants engaged into the APS will be subject to a probation period.

Interested candidates who have received a redundancy benefit from an APS agency are welcome to apply but note that they cannot be engaged until their redundancy benefit period has expired.
