They are accountable to ensure they have knowledge of and compliance with relevant maritime environmental legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Defence and Navy's mission and policy requirements. An APS 6 Environment Officer will work independently with the opportunity for reasonable autonomy and accountability for the achievement of outcomes of their work. They will exercise both initiative and judgement in the interpretation of policy and in the application of practices and procedures. They will provide detailed environmental management technical, professional and policy advice in relation to complex work and contribute to strategic planning, program and project management and policy development. An APS 6 Environmental Officer may be a team coach or lead a team and be accountable to set work priorities and manage workflows. They are expected to be capable of building team capability through coaching, feedback and developing the quality of work undertaken by others within a work unit. They will exercise the associated people and financial responsibilities to achieve work unit outcomes. An APS 6 Environmental Officer will have considerable level of stakeholder engagement and will liaise with stakeholders in relation to complex issues. They will be required to identify, anticipate and respond to stakeholder needs and expectations to achieve work unit and Defence outcomes. They will be accountable to contribute towards ongoing self-improvement and professional development.About our TeamThe Directorate of Navy Safety and Environment (NavySafE) works across a range of specialisations including work health and safety, occupational hygiene, environment protection, and compliance and risk management systems. We are an integrated workforce, which includes military and civilian personnel with highly specialised skills and deep maritime experience. Navy Safety and Environment (NavySafE) is responsible for developing, sustaining and providing advice on both the Navy Safety Management System and Navy Environment Management Systems. This ensures they meet accountabilities for Chief of Navy (CN) and Capability Manager, and involves harmonising the legislative requirements in the maritime context.Our Ideal Candidate Deliver environmental management activities in accordance with Defence and Navy environmental policies, procedures and applicable legislation. Monitor and assure Navy's environmental management programs and systems. Understand and implement Navy's environmental legislative obligations to ensure compliance with Defence's environmental management responsibilities.Identify environmental policy required in Navy to align with Defence's obligations, policies or management plans.Facilitate and build relationships with stakeholders in order to represent and communicate Navy and Defence's environmental requirements, policies and activities.Work collaboratively within a team environment in order to deliver Defence environmental objectives. Employ sound, informed judgement, and provide advice on environmental management issues.Analyse, prioritise and initiate improvements to business practices to further Defence's environmental policy objectives.
