The Legal and Audit Division is a specialist in-house practice that supports lawful implementation of the DVA's objectives by advising on the management of legal risk as well as providing legal advice, litigation and dispute resolution services, legal training and legislation services.We are looking for candidates with strong technical legal skills, who are great communicators, can manage competing priorities, enjoy working collaboratively, think flexibly and have a positive attitude. In addition to your strong legal skills and experience in the relevant area, you need to have strong and efficient administration, liaison and communication skills, and the ability to lead, manage and mentor others in the delivery of the work.Our Legislation and Instruments Section works collegiately across many areas of DVA to develop primary and subordinate legislation, appointment instruments and business delegations.Opportunities are currently available for suitably qualified and experienced candidates for Legislative Drafter (APS6) and Senior Legislative Drafter (EL1) roles in this section.DutiesAs an APS6 Legislative Drafter, you will:Draft legislative instruments and other types of instruments of some complexity or sensitivity that effectively achieve the policy intent and are easily understood by users of the instruments.Assist instructors to draft high quality explanatory statements for legislative instruments.Give advice to instructors about issues arising from drafting of instruments.Assist policy and program areas in instructing the Office of Parliamentary Counsel.Prepare and review other legal documents of some complexity.Contribute to the collective knowledge of the Branch, particularly in relation to drafting practices and statutory interpretation.Seek, when appropriate, guidance and advice in relation to your duties.Deliver other legal services that meet client expectations, taking into account both legal and non-legal risks, professional standards and the role of DVA.Build and maintain strong client relationships with business areas while promoting the Legal & Audit Division as DVA's trusted advisor.Continually develop your professional legal expertise, through participation in development, training and study opportunities, and meet Continuing Legal Education requirements and other expectations.Support leadership of the section and the branch, including through promoting a positive working environment, and contributing to corporate leadership activities.You may also supervise and support junior staff, including by contributing to the setting of their work priorities and monitoring workflow.As an EL1 Senior Legislative Drafter, you will:Draft complex or sensitive legislative instruments and other types of instruments that effectively achieve the policy intent and are easily understood by users of the instruments.Assist the Principal Legislative Drafter in leading and managing drafting projects.Read and settle the work of other legislative drafters.Assist instructors to draft high quality explanatory statements for legislative instruments.Give advice to instructors about issues arising from drafting of instruments.Assist policy and program areas in instructing the Office of Parliamentary Counsel.Prepare and review other complex legal documents.Actively contribute to the collective knowledge of the Branch, particularly in relation to drafting practices and statutory interpretation.Deliver other legal services that meet client expectations, taking into account both legal and non-legal risks, professional standards and the role of DVA.Build and maintain strong client relationships with business areas while promoting the Legal & Audit Division as the DVA's trusted advisor.Actively develop your professional legal expertise, through participation in development, training and study opportunities, and meet Continuing Legal Education requirements and other expectations.Supervise and support junior staff, including by setting clear direction of work priorities and monitoring workflow, and developing legislative drafting skills and other relevant knowledge of the junior staff.Support leadership of the section and the branch, including through promoting a positive working environment, and contributing to corporate leadership activities.Mandatory RequirementsMust have a Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor degree (or equivalent) from a recognised Australian tertiary education provider.Must be admitted as a legal practitioner (however described) of the High Court or the Supreme Court of a State or Territory of Australia and must possess, or be eligible to obtain, a practising certificate.This recruitment process is being used to fill ongoing and/or non-ongoing position/s.
