APS6 Lawyers deliver a broad range of in-house legal services to the ACIC. In this role, you will have the opportunity to gain experience providing a broad range of in-house legal services within a multi-disciplinary environment and engage with key internal and external stakeholders on legal matters.
Key responsibilities of an APS6 Lawyer:Work collaboratively across the national legal services branch and deliver high quality, client-focused legal services;Undertake statutory interpretation and provide advice on information disclosure;Provide legal advice and support to operational teams including in obtaining warrants, controlled operations, and other operational activities;Statutory interpretation of the Australian Crime Commission Act 2002 (Cth) and other legislation relevant to the exercise of the ACIC's functions;Provide accurate and timely legal advice in support of the ACIC's functions under the Australian Crime Commission Act 2002 (Cth), and within practice areas that may include litigation, freedom of information, administrative law, employment law or commercial law;Provide legal advice in relation to criminal intelligence assessments and administrative decision making;Advise on information disclosure and information protection;Contribute to criminal and civil litigation matters in State and Federal Courts and tribunals, working with external solicitors and counsel;Draft legal documentation including contracts and MOUs for ACIC business areas.EL1 Senior Lawyers contribute to the delivery of a national in-house legal service focused on assisting the ACIC achieve our statutory objectives. The Senior Lawyer will support the Director deliver legal services within a multi-disciplinary environment and engages with key internal and external stakeholders on legal matters.
Key responsibilities of an EL1 Senior Lawyer:Work collaboratively across the national legal services branch to deliver high quality, client-focused legal services.Provide legal advice on the exercise of the ACIC's statutory functions under the Australian Crime Commission Act 2002 (Cth) and within practice areas that may include criminal disclosure, litigation, administrative law or commercial law.Establish and maintain professional relationships with operational and business clients to strategically identify and manage legal risk from the outset of new and complex activities.Contribute to and take carriage of litigation (including judicial and merits review) in State and Federal Courts and tribunals, working with external solicitors and counsel.Contribute to and advise on law reform proposals, including identifying law reform opportunities.Work closely with and instruct external legal service providers on a range of matters as required.Supervising or mentoring junior lawyers and legal support staff.To be successful as a Lawyer, you will demonstrate the following experience, skills and attributes:Have a minimum of 3 years post-admission experience;Can work autonomously on complex legal matters;Can proactively identify innovation initiatives and facilitate improvements including training needs across the branch;Will understand the principles of statutory interpretation;Can work under limited direction and is motivated and proactive in identifying improvements to legal processes and practices;Have effective written communication skills with a proven ability to deliver timely legal advice;Be client-focused and have a proven ability to develop co-operative internal and external relationships which support the exchange of information and progression of legal initiatives.To be successful as a Senior Lawyer, you will demonstrate the following experience, skills and attributes:Ideally has 5 years' post-admission experience with 3-5 years in a relevant area of law such as criminal/law enforcement, administrative (including FOI), litigation or commercial law (including procurement and contracting).Is client-focused and will strive to develop innovative solutions to manage legal risks across a broad range of areas.Is motivated, proactive and able to identify/mitigate legal risks.Has the ability to provide sound legal advice to a range of audiences and distil and communicate complex legal concepts for non-legal audiences.Has a strong commitment to upholding their professional legal obligations and encouraging a culture of compliance and sound governance.Admitted, or eligible for admission, as a legal practitioner of the High Court of Australia or a Supreme Court of a State or Territory.Citizenship – To be eligible for employment with the ACIC, applicants must be an Australian citizen.Security Clearance - The Australian community expects ACIC employees to maintain the highest levels of security and integrity. Successful applicants will be required to obtain and maintain a minimum Negative Vetting 1 security clearance.Pre-Employment Screening – All candidates must satisfy an Organisational Suitability Assessment (OSA) prior to being offered employment at the ACIC.The ACIC is committed to diversity and inclusion.
