They are accountable to have and maintain a well-developed understanding of and compliance to relevant legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Defence's mission and policy requirements.
An APS 5 Work Health and Safety Officer will be accountable for organising their workflow and making independent decisions relating to their area of responsibility.
They will interpret and provide advice within the strategic welfare function area based on legislation, policy and procedures.
They will undertake specialist research and analysis, conduct reviews, assessment, investigations and perform procedural, clerical and administrative support work to achieve results.
The APS 5 Work Health and Safety Officer will coordinate and contribute to the work of a team consistent to a work plan and provide advice and assistance on methods of task completion to team members.
They may be a team coach or supervise a team and be accountable to set work priorities, allocate work, and manage workflows and performance.
They are expected to be capable of reviewing and developing the quality of work undertaken by others and identifying opportunities for on-the-job training within a work unit.
The APS 5 Work Health and Safety Officer will be required to engage and communicate with stakeholders to identify, respond and provide advice on issues to achieve work unit and Defence outcomes.
They will be accountable to contribute towards ongoing self-improvement and professional development.

Our Ideal Candidate Our ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate strong skills and experience in: Researching and analysing activities to identify and address work health and safety risks to capability.
Contributing to implementation and continuous improvement of work health and safety management systems in accordance with legislation and Defence policies.
Providing advice on the application of work health and safety legislation and Defence policies and procedures.
High level planning, organising and prioritising skills.
Managing complex work packages in compressed timeframes Stakeholder engagement and management.
The candidate will have the following demonstrated attributes: Building/maintaining positive stakeholder relationships.
Strong planning/time management skills, particularly prioritisation and critical thinking.
Judgement and a bias for action in driving outcomes, including problem solving and flexibility.
Financial and contracting experience.
Skilful communicator (both written and verbal).
Knowledge of Defence and/or Space is highly desirable but not mandatory.
Some domestic travel may be required.
The successful candidate will be required to have or will be required to obtain a Negative Vetting level 1 security clearance before commencing in the role.
