$83,706 - $89,659 + up to 15.4% Superannuation Darwin - NT The Role The APS 5 Work Health and Safety Officer role is critical to assisting HMAS Coonawarra to meet its work health and safety obligations: You will provide technical expertise and advice on the application of work health and safety legislation, codes of practice, Defence, Navy and Security and Estate Group safety policies and procedures You will engage with base management teams, Defence Commanders, and contractors to positively influence how Work Health and Safety (WHS) risks and incidents are managed on HMAS Coonawarra and Larrakeyah Defence Precinct You will undertake research and analysis, conduct reviews, assessments and compliance investigations to improve health and safety outcomes across HMAS Coonawarra and the Larrakeyah Defence Precinct estate with a focus on maritime structures, wharves and dockyard facilities You will be responsible for contributing to HMAS Coonawarra and Base WHS committees and Base WHS Management planning and be required to provide input to broader Navy policy and papers as needed.
You will contribute to the implementation and continuous improvement of work health and safety management systems to meet legislation and Navy and Defence policies.
About our Team HMAS Coonawarra is the predominant unit within the Larrakeyah Defence Precinct located close to Darwin's city centre and is a vitally important Navy port - a gateway to Australia's northern neighbours and the centre from which maritime border security operations are conducted.
HMAS Coonawarra supports over 700 uniformed naval personnel and is the homeport to three classes of Navy patrol vessels and one class of Army vessel and regularly hosts major exercises and operations involving around 100 visiting Australian and foreign major warships each year.
The HMAS Coonawarra Command team holds authority and responsibility over all personnel and is responsible for planning the employment of organising, directing, coordinating and controlling naval personnel for the accomplishment of its assigned mission.
This includes responsibility for health, welfare, morale and discipline of all personnel.
Key functions of the HMAS Coonawarra safety directorate include: Providing analysis and reporting to the Commanding Officer on WHS responsibilities, performance and trends Managing Navy interactions with the Commonwealth WHS Regulator (Comcare) Working with Navy and wider Defence units and industry partners to ensure effective management and compliance of WHS for uniformed members and Defence contractors Working with Defence stakeholders, Groups and Services to ensure a coordinated approach to safety Representing HMAS Coonawarra in Navy WHS and in the development of Navy WHS policies Our Ideal Candidate Our ideal candidate will be a highly motivated and adaptable person who has: An understanding of WHS legislation and Defence policy frameworks and their application in dynamic workplace arrangements.
The ability to provide accurate technical advice in relation to WHS matters.
Excellent attention to detail and be able to develop practical WHS solutions based on legislation, policy and procedures.
The ability to undertake complex work tasks and compliance investigations under limited direction.
Experience coordinating workflows and monitoring simultaneous work packages to ensure tasks are completed to a schedule.
Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to lead and work with various stakeholders to positively influence safety outcomes.
Strong interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to both communicate WHS policy and positively influence others in the application of WHS policy and procedures.
The physical fitness to be able to work both in an office environment, as well as outside in a complex and hazardous maritime dockyard facility and estate in challenging environmental conditions A passion for safety!
