The Murray-Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) is an independent government agency which, in partnership with Basin governments, manages the Murray–Darling Basin's water resources in the national interest. With the enactment of the Water Act 2007, the MDBA was established as an independent expertise-based statutory agency.
The MDBA aims to achieve a healthy working Basin for the benefit of all Australians. The Murray–Darling Basin contains a rich diversity of natural environments that are unique in Australia and the world. The Basin is also crucial to Australia's economy and home to 2.3 million Australians, including people from over 50 First Nations. How we manage the Basin as a whole connected system, manage our water carefully, and protect it for future generations is set out in the Murray-Darling Basin Plan.
The Water Resources Modeller The Hydrological Analysis Branch undertakes a range of modelling projects related to water resources management, including:
model development and programming,hydrological/hydraulic modelling to assess impacts of different policy and/or operation rule changes,hydrologic analysis of river and wetland systems in the Basin, andsupporting daily operations of the River Murray System.The team has a role in providing technical advice to governments on water resource planning, Basin Plan implementation, and managing environmental water. The HA team also works closely with the Integrated River Modelling Uplift (IRMU) Branch, which was initiated to upgrade modelling capability across the Murray-Darling Basin.
The role works closely with other parts of the Murray-Darling Basin Authority, other agencies of the Australian Government, the Basin States and Territories and wider stakeholders.
Specific duties Perform hydrological modelling and technical analysis to assist the implementation of the Basin Plan and Water Sharing Plan accreditation, the Basin Plan Review, and compliance and auditing with the Basin Plan.Work with the team to complete technical studies for assessing the impacts of policy options/river systems operations on various water users in the system. The analysis will consider the complexity of the system, legislative requirements and trade-offs between competing demand and interests.Support software development to modify and improve modelling of river systems in the Murray Darling Basin (e.g. programming in FORTRAN/Visual C#/Visual Basic/Python) to enable new water resource management options and policies to be examined.Draft reports, technical manuals and presentation of results and analysis in formats suitable for a range of audiences including Project Boards, technical working groups, community reference panels, river operators and the general public.Contribute and work as part of multidisciplinary project teams from various Divisions of the Authority.What we offer you You will have the opportunity to work on projects where you contribute to shaping the future of one of Australia's greatest natural assets and protect it for future generations.
