About the Role
The School of Geography, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (SGEAS) is seeking an Academic Specialist in analytical geochemistry to support a wide range of research applications, from geochronology and environmental source-tracing, to biomedical and space research and beyond. Working with Dr Brandon Mahan and the Melbourne Analytical Geochemistry (MAG) team, the successful candidate will operate state-of-the-art ICP-MS instrumentation, contribute to routine laboratory operations and analyses, and develop new analytical techniques. This role also includes driving independent research, supervising postgraduate students, and enhancing research through high-impact publications and collaborations across academic, government, industry and commercial applications.
Your responsibilities will include:
Carry out high quality trace element and isotope ratio analyses, for a variety of research projects and stakeholders (internal and external).
Assist with and develop new techniques for laser- and solution-based ICP-MS, including the use of collision cell technology and state-of-the-art automated systems.
Communicate and disseminate information relating to research projects to scientific, industry, government and wider communities.
Contribute to the preparation and submission of competitive grant applications or tenders related to the appointee's research background.
Supervise the laboratory components of undergraduate and postgraduate training, and contribute to research projects.

Who We Are Looking For
You will be a proactive and dynamic team player with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, able to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders. Flexible and adaptable to the needs of the research group, you bring strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines, while fostering meaningful research and industry partnerships.
You will also have:
A PhD in trace element and/or isotope geochemistry or related discipline is preferable, but not requisite if other evidence of equivalent expertise is presented.
Demonstrated ability to work to a schedule and meet pre-agreed deadlines.
Demonstrated experience in geochemistry clean lab protocols and mass spectrometry in analytical geochemistry
Demonstrated experience in equipment troubleshooting with a specific emphasis on ICP-MS mass spectrometry.
A demonstrated aptitude for independent research with an excellent record of research productivity and publication in international scientific journals, commensurate with experience and opportunities.

This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University.
