Full-time fixed-term position for up to 3 years.Base salary will be in the range $89,861.38 - $96,402.32 + 17% Superannuation (HEW Level 6).The Animal Research Officer is responsible for providing expert care and husbandry for laboratory rodents, managing complex colony operations, and delivering technical support to research groups at the TRI Human Immune Model Facility.
This state-of-the-art facility enables world-class translational research using innovative technology and humanised mice, which are the gold standard for modeling human immune systems, disease modeling, and drug testing.
The role involves supporting a range of research activities and offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to significant projects in a dynamic and collaborative environment dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge.Key ResponsibilitiesProvide expert care and breeding husbandry for laboratory rodents, including identification, weaning, and tissue collection.Manage complex colony services, coordinating activities with researchers to meet experimental needs.Supervise cleaning, biosecurity, and maintenance of animal facilities, ensuring compliance with safety protocols.Maintain accurate records and reports related to operations, inventory, and training.Review animal ethics applications and provide guidance on breeding plans and compliance.Perform and supervise complex animal procedures for research projects.Conduct PC2 wet lab work with humanised mouse models, including organ processing and flow cytometry.Be available to work after hours from time to time as required, participation on the weekend/public holiday roster.Train staff, students, and researchers in animal procedures and operational duties.Assist in reviewing SOPs and ensure adherence to processes.Medical Clearance: Working with laboratory animals is an inherent requirement of the position.

Ideal qualifications include:A degree in animal science or cell biology, or a Diploma in animal technology, with at least two years of relevant experience in laboratory animal facilities.Extensive experience in the daily operations of an animal containment facility and managing complex genetically modified rodent production.Proficiency in basic animal surgical procedures and PC2 wet lab techniques, including primary cell culture and flow cytometry.Knowledge of codes of practice for animal care and OGTR containment, along with experience supervising staff and researchers.Strong interpersonal skills for effective communication with clients.Demonstrated ability to prioritize workload, work independently, and meet deadlines.Vaccinations and Immunisation: It is a condition of employment for this role that if you are required now or in the future, to work or interact in Queensland Health clinical facility; or in an equivalent clinical health facility; or health care role; or will be required to perform work tasks that put you at risk of exposure to vaccine-preventable disease you are required to be immunised against, and remain immunised against, certain vaccine preventable diseases (VPDs) in accordance with the University's Vaccinations and Immunisation Guidelines (PPL 2.60.08).
