About the National Measurement Institute The National Measurement Institute is the Australian Government's national authority on measurement.
We play an important role in the Australian economy by leading, maintaining and regulating Australia's measurement system.
We deliver world-class measurement products, advice and client services and administer the regulatory framework for measurement.
Our national measurement standards are recognised internationally and we work to enhance and maintain these standards.
The Analytical Services Branch consists of a team of over 100 staff based in North Ryde and Port Melbourne.
We are responsible for conducting chemical and biological measurement on a wide range of samples (including water, soil, food and pharmaceuticals).
Performing a diverse range of tests (including elements, nutrients, organic contaminants and microbiological parameters).
We provide analytical solutions and technical expertise for a large set of private sector and government clients across the environmental, food and health sectors, enabling them to meet their business, research and regulatory compliance needs.
We also work closely with the tertiary education sector in Australia and have a number of international stakeholders.

Our ideal candidate Tertiary qualifications in a scientific field (chemistry or equivalent) covering Agrichemicals and Veterinary Drugs Residues analysis with a minimum of 3 years relevant experience.
Demonstrated ability to independently undertake Antimicrobial/Veterinary and other residues in food analysis showing initiative and judgement.
Highly organised and able to work in a fast turnaround time environment to meet clients' needs.
Experience in analysing samples for Antimicrobial/Veterinary and other residues in food using LCMSMS equipment.
Able to check and authorise work from other analysts and report results within LIMS.
Have a good knowledge of QA/QC requirements for testing samples for Antimicrobial/Veterinary and other residues in food and a sound knowledge of operating within a NATA accredited laboratory.
Lead a team of Chemists while demonstrating initiative and drive to meet the goals of the team and the section.
Demonstrated ability to consistently exhibit the NMI values of being adaptable, accountable, innovate, inclusive, influential and strategic.
What you will do Organise, motivate and contribute to the overall performance of a team.
In particular co-ordinate the team to meet the quality standards and turnaround times of the section.
Undertake performance review of staff as per the Department MyPlan system and offer constructive feedback so that staff achieve assigned tasks.
Independently analyse samples with complex matrices, using innovative initiatives for Antimicrobial / Veterinary and other residues.
Identify deviations of data during analysis at reporting and authorisation stages to monitor and ensure efficient delivery of laboratory reports and effectively communicate to strategic stakeholders.
Hold a NATA signatory status for the relevant analysis to ensure compliance to ISO17025 quality requirements.
Priorities and monitor workflow based on the strategic needs of stakeholders.
Troubleshoot, coordinate calibrations and maintenance associated with LC instrument.
Communicate and collaborate effectively both orally and in writing with internal and external stakeholders.
Prepare advance technical reports, methods and procedures.
Maintain WH&S and Quality Systems including reviewing and updating documents, calibrations and training records.
Lead the Section response to audits and Corrective Actions.
Engender and lead a culture of flexibility, adaptability and Continuous Improvement to enable agile responses to new demands and improve laboratory processes and service outcomes.
Contribute strongly to the strategic objectives and goals of the Branch and NMI, including through cross organisational collaborations and stakeholder engagement Eligibility Tertiary qualifications in a scientific field (chemistry or equivalent) To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, candidates must be Australian Citizens.
Positions require a Baseline security clearance and successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
Notes Prior experience with operating within a NATA accredited laboratory.
3 years relevant experience is preferable.
Experience in Agrichemicals and Veterinary Drugs Residues analysis is preferable Experience in leading teams A merit pool may be established and used to fill future vacancies within 18 months from the date the vacancy was first advertised in the Gazette.
The department does currently offer flexible work opportunities for many roles.
This vacancy is Melbourne based, although flexible or remote work arrangements may be considered.
