About the Role: An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced Cardiothoracic Surgeon to join the unit with an opportunity to also take on the role of the Unit Director. The Unit Director will have a key role in leading the Cardiothoracic Surgery Service to achieve our strategic priorities and provide exceptional health care to our patients from the ACT and surrounding regions. Reporting to the Clinical Director of Surgery, this role works collaboratively within the Division of Surgery leadership team and across CHS.

The Cardiothoracic Surgery Unit is staffed by a combination of Visiting Medical Officers (VMO) and Staff Specialists. This role is for a VMO or Staff Specialist in the Cardiothoracic Surgery Unit with the opportunity for additional responsibilities as the Unit Director. The tenure of the Unit Director role is 3 years, with the possibility of extension up to 5 years.

The Unit Director will provide high level clinical leadership, ensure that allocated resources are managed to meet all service delivery targets and that service provision is high quality and safe. A key role will also be to ensure medical engagement with the service, and to efficiently manage medical staff recruitment, performance, roster and leave arrangements.

The appointee will be expected to represent the Cardiothoracic Surgery Unit both internally and externally at a range of strategic and planning forums. During the tenure of this position, numerous strategic projects will be delivered of which the Unit Director will have a pivotal role.

There is an expectation that the successful applicant will maintain accountability for their own practice standards and education. The position holder is expected to operate within the Public Sector Management Act (1994), the ACT Public Service Code of Conduct and the professional requirements specified by the appointee's Specialist College. The Unit Director's performance, accountability and responsibilities will be routinely assessed by the Clinical Director Division of Surgery through an Individual Strength Engagement and Development Plan (Learning and Development Plan).

The Unit Director role will attract a Level 1 Managerial Allowance. As a guide, it is expected that approximately 60% of the Unit Director's time will be focused on their substantive clinical service delivery role, approximately 20% to non-clinical duties, and approximately 20% to managerial duties or as outlined in the individual's contract. Once the Unit Director role ceases, time spent in clinical service delivery will increase to approximately 80% or as outlined in the individual's contract. For a VMO, the contract will be varied accordingly to reflect the managerial duties for the duration of the tenure, which will only remain payable subject to a satisfactory performance assessment.
The position holder is expected to operate within the Public Sector Management Act (1994), the ACT Public Service Code of Conduct and the professional requirements specified by the appointee's Specialist College.
