About the Opportunity We have an exciting opportunity- for an Aboriginal Health Worker to join a diverse team specialising in Peri-infant Mental health (PIMHS). PIMHS is a multidisciplinary service that helps women and parents, who are pregnant or have a child under the age of two, and are experiencing severe, acute of complex mental illness. The team consists of consists of Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Social workers, Registered Nurses/Midwives, Clinical Nurse Consultants and Aboriginal Health Workers. We are supportive and encouraging of each other and welcome new colleagues openly. The role is an opportunity to help shape the way we deliver culturally responsive services to Aboriginal people and families. . We are looking for someone who is passionate about their culture and has a dedication to supporting the social and emotional wellbeing of our community. This role is open to people who have had experience working in the Mental Health sector, or people who have experience in child and family programs looking to make a career change into health. This role involves working alongside Mental Health clinicians to ensure that both the clinical and cultural needs of our consumers are met. What You'll be Doing The primary role of this position is to provide culturally safe, recovery orientated evidence based assessment and interventions to clients of the mental health service who identify as Aboriginal and their families. Working within the multi-disciplinary team process, the process will also undertake mental health promotion and community liaison tasks in support of the development of culturally appropriate mental health services within the SWSLHD. In negotiation with SWSLHD, to undertake appropriate further education to develop the necessary competencies of a Mental Health Professional. Where You'll Be Working SWSLHD operates it's services on the lands of the Dharawal Darug and Gundungurra people and has a rich history of working alongside local Aboriginal communities and our districts Aboriginal Health Unit. You will be provided with cultural supervision, participate in cultural strengths mapping and form part of a larger, supportive Aboriginal workforce. Our Mental Health Service has a large and well-supported team of Aboriginal Mental Health workers who are supported by an Aboriginal Mental Health Coordinator. Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal descent through parentage, identification as being Aboriginal and being accepted in the community as such. Exemption is claimed under Section 14 of the Anti Discrimination Act 1977. Willingness and ability to complete further education in Mental Health or relevant qualification e.g., Certificate IV Mental Health; Bachelor of Health Science (Mental Health) qualification at Charles Sturt University or an equivalent clinical qualification negotiated and approved by the Mental Health Service Demonstrated understanding of evidence based practice, informed by the factors that have impacted on the social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal communities. Demonstrated case management or care coordination experience delivering health or social services to Aboriginal communities. Demonstrated experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver health or social services to Aboriginal communities. Ability to undertake health/social needs assessment to inform the delivery of care and referral/liaison with other Government and non-Government service providers including Aboriginal specific services. Understanding of the NSW Mental Health Act 2007. Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills and computer literacy. Effective interpersonal skills, problem solving skills and personal resilience. Applicants must possess an Australian C-Class driver's license (including P1 or P2). Those who hold a C class license (P1 or P2 included) from a state other than NSW must obtain a NSW C class (P1 or P2 included) license within three months of appointment.
