Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Engagement Manager (EL1) (Affirmative Measure - First Nations)
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is looking to fill the role of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Engagement Manager (EL1).
About the areaThere is increasing demand for higher quality data about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to inform key policy initiatives such as Closing the Gap. The ABS is dedicated to early and ongoing conversations with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to increase the participation in, and relevance of, our statistical collections. The ABS is also committed to returning information to the community and finding better ways of providing access to data.
The Centre of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Statistics has a leadership and coordination role for national statistical activity about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. They engage with communities across a range of statistical activities and outputs such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and social surveys, the five-yearly Census of Population and Housing, administrative data, data integration projects, and more.
The section consists of:

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Engagement Managers and Officers spread across Australia
the section's Director and a team of data and statistical analysts based in Canberra
an outposted officer to the National Indigenous Australians Agency

The section has key partnerships with community organisations, the ABS Round Table on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Statistics, the National Indigenous Australians Agency, the Productivity Commission, the Department of Social Services, and the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations.
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Engagement Manager will help the ABS connect and work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities; and ensure cultural support and guidance is provided to ABS staff.
Responsibilities include:

helping the ABS connect with, and understand the needs of, communities in your region
collaborating within your team, and across the ABS, to develop advice to deliver positive outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities across Australia
providing guidance and support for the planning, development and implementation of statistical collections, such as the Census of Population and Housing
supporting the implementation of the Framework for Governance of Indigenous Data and the ABS Reconciliation Action Plan
building the cultural capability, safety, and integrity of ABS staff and operations

This role is only open to people that identify and are recognised as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, under the Affirmative Measures Guidelines. This is your opportunity to play a critical role in ensuring that Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander voices and needs are embedded into what the ABS does and how we do it.
To be eligible for these roles you:

must be an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person
must be an Australian citizen at the time you apply
may need to obtain (or hold) and maintain at least a Baseline security clearance
ABS employees who have access to market sensitive information are restricted in market trading activities. You may not be allowed to trade in financial products while employed. This role is not restricted in trading

To be suitable you should have most or all of the following skills, qualities and experience:

stakeholder engagement and building and keeping strong relationships with a variety of people and organisations
good community connections and an ability to engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stakeholders to connect and shape the objectives of your organisation to community outcomes
collaborating with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to develop and provide cultural advice and perspectives to build staff capability and lead the review of materials and approaches to ensure cultural safety
an understanding of data and statistics and how they can impact and empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities
leading and managing high-performing teams and working effectively within a diverse and geographically-dispersed team
demonstrating and fostering a strong, inclusive, diverse, trusting and collaborative culture within and across teams
ability to represent your community and your organisation in meetings and forums at a variety of levels.
