Who we are ABARES - the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences - is the research arm of the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. Our mission is to provide professionally independent and world-class multi-disciplinary research, analysis, and advice to inform decision-makers in this department, other government agencies and the private sector on significant issues affecting Australia's agriculture, fisheries, and forestry industries.
The Agricultural Forecasting & Trade Branch provides research, analysis and advice on agricultural commodity prices and production status; agricultural outlook; adjustment and sector policy; trade and global markets; and emerging policy issues. The branch also provides a range of outreach activities including delivery of the ABARES Outlook conference series, webinars, stakeholder engagement and management of the Departmental library.
The ABARES Impact and Engagement Program supports ABARES' research activities through the provision of management and coordination services across project, program and resource management, major and regional events, corporate and business planning, communications, and departmental library services.
The Job
ABARES is seeking a highly motivated and skilled event manager to plan dynamic and engaging events to drive ABARES outreach and strengthen its public profile. The Bureau hosts several conferences and activities annually including the National and Regional Outlook conference series. These activities are key public events for ABARES and are important in communicating the ABARES' work to stakeholders. The primary responsibility of the Event Manager is to coordinate and manage all aspects of ABARES events from conception through to completion. The successful applicant should be well organised and able to work in a team environment. They will be able to coordinate multiple moving parts under pressure and respond to changes or obstacles at short notice with minimal disruption. They will need to have recent experience in managing national events and have a sound understanding of best practice arrangements and be able to apply this to their duties. 
The occupant of this position will work within the ABARES Impact and Engagement Section to: 
• Plan, manage and execute events for internal and external purposes. 
• Develop and manage a detailed events budget including accurately following documented procurement procedures. 
• Manage the events team including supervising staff. 
• Liaise with potential sponsors, collaborators, and suppliers. 
• Work collaboratively with the communications manager to promote events. 
• Develop sound policies, procedures, and templates to support the role. 
• Actively engage in continuous improvement activities.

Please note that this recruitment process will initially be used to fill the vacancy in the section and that the role may be performed from any of the locations listed above. The merit pool established through this selection process, which is valid for a period of eighteen months from the date the vacancy was advertised in the Public Service Gazette, may also be used to fill future ongoing vacancies in the branch where the duties are of a similar nature.
Knowledge and experience
This position will suit a highly motivated person with experience in event management. They should be professional, flexible, and willing to work across a broad range of functions and disciplines. Our ideal candidate will possess the following personal attributes, skills, and experience: 
• Proven experience in event management including conferences, webinars, launches and other promotional events, including hybrid event delivery. 
• Proven ability to manage competing priorities, work to tight deadlines, and demonstrate strong attention to detail. 
• Proven ability to supervise and manage staff, providing a supportive, respectful environment. 
• Excellent interpersonal, representational, negotiation and liaison skills and the capacity to work productively with a wide range of stakeholders. 
• A proven self-starter with the ability to set own work priorities, manage workflow, and to implement and monitor quality processes to facilitate consistency in practice and procedure within the context of a constantly changing environment. 
• Well-developed skills using Events Air or a similar event management software.

Citizenship - To be eligible for employment with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry you must be an Australian citizen.
Security Clearance - This position requires a Baseline Vetting security clearance. You will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
Pre-employment Check - Your suitability for employment will be assessed through a pre-employment screening process. This process includes a requirement to undergo and satisfy a National Police Check, referee checks, character clearance and where required a pre-employment medical assessment, specified mandatory qualification(s) validation and a probation period of 6 months.
MSIC and ASIC Licences – If the position requires unescorted access within an aviation or maritime security zone, you will be required to obtain and maintain an Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC) or Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC).
