About the National Film and Sound Archive The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA) is Australia's audiovisual archive, collecting, preserving, and sharing audiovisual media. The collection dates back to 1935, making it one of the world's oldest audiovisual collections. The NFSA is currently undergoing digital transformation and rebuilding its curatorial workforce.
About the Team The Conservation team is part of the Conservation and Collection Management Section of the Collection Preservation Branch. The team conducts activities for the preservation and ongoing care of the audiovisual, documents, and artefacts collection.
The Opportunity The Audiovisual Conservation Specialist plays a key role in preparing and preserving the physical audiovisual collection. This role will support the Team Leader and AV Conservation Coordinators, maintain conservation lab equipment, and train new staff. The position will undertake AV Conservation treatment, research, and support the development of policies and procedures.
Job DescriptionUnder general direction, this position is responsible for delivering the following functions:
Carry out AV conservation tasks including:examination,research,conservation treatment;identify the content of AV materials to ascertain intellectual and physical content.Update and review technical procedures and process documentation.Provide technical advice and training to Conservation staff and internal clients.Undertake complicated AV technical selections, examinations, and conservation treatment.Carry out and report on conservation projects across Audiovisual Conservation Specialists.Contribute to the development and delivery of core AV conservation and research.Selection Criteria The successful candidate will demonstrate their capacity against the following:
Experience working with a range of collection materials, including film and other audiovisual forms, and ability to apply sound conservation practices.Demonstrated capacity to prioritise workflows and coordinate resources with effective time management and communication skills.Experience with digital systems including collection management systems.Capacity to apply technical knowledge of risks and hazards associated with audiovisual collections.Ability to work independently and as part of a team to creatively solve problems.Desired Skills and Experience Tertiary qualifications related to cultural heritage conservation or audiovisual archiving and/or equivalent experience.Attention to detail for technical tasks.How to Apply When applying, please address the 'Key Responsibilities' and 'Selection Criteria' in 500 words or less, outlining how your experience demonstrates that you would be our ideal candidate.
