This position is identified for an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person and is intended to constitute a special measure under section 8 (1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth), and section 57 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1996 (NT). WHO ARE WE? Established in 1991, Danila Dilba Health Services (DDHS) is a not-for-profit, Aboriginal community-controlled organisation that is committed to providing culturally appropriate, comprehensive primary health care services and community development within the Biluru (Aboriginal) community of the Yilli Rreung (Greater Darwin) region in the Northern Territory.
We are focused on acute care, immunisation, chronic disease management, women's health, men's health, child and maternal health and sexual health. We also provide a range of community programs in areas including health promotion, mental health, social and emotional wellbeing, and alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.
The Aboriginal Health Practitioner Trainee will join our dedicated team to undergo a comprehensive training program aimed at developing the necessary skills and knowledge to become a qualified Aboriginal Health Practitioner within the Danila Dilba Health Services. The role requires periodic attendance at the Registered Training Organisation, which includes residential boarding at Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education in Batchelor NT. Trainees will rotate through the various clinics and programs within DDHS.
WHAT YOU WILL DO Participate actively in a structured training program to acquire essential knowledge and skills related to Aboriginal health practices, cultural competence, and healthcare protocols.Engage with the Aboriginal patients and community to build relationships, understand community needs, and promote culturally responsive healthcare services.Aid experienced Aboriginal Health Practitioners in delivering healthcare services, including but not limited to health assessments, care planning, and health education.Maintain accurate and confidential health records, ensuring compliance with relevant policies and procedures and legislation.Demonstrate a commitment to cultural safety and competence in healthcare delivery, promoting an understanding of the social determinants of health affecting the Aboriginal community.SELECTION CRITERIA Be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent and be able to provide proof of Aboriginality from a registered Aboriginal community organisation.Currently enrolled or be able to successfully enrol in the Certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Care (Practice) program, demonstrating a commitment to professional development in the field.Commitment and ability to attend residential offsite clinical training in Batchelor NT and associated education sessions necessary to progress towards becoming a registered Aboriginal Health Practitioner (AHP).Demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, fostering positive relationships and facilitating clear communication.Ability to utilise computer software programs and a good understanding of Microsoft Office.Willingness to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team, demonstrating the ability to take direction, learn in a dynamic healthcare environment, and work effectively under supervision.
