Townsville Aboriginal and Islander Health Service – Townsville QLD The purpose of the Family Facilitator (FF) is to work collaboratively with at-risk families to assist them in identifying their needs using the Family Led Decision Making (FLDM) framework to ensure their children are safe. The Family Facilitator will provide support to families through culturally appropriate practices that effectively engage with traditional owners, elders, and families across all communities. This position is also expected to build and maintain professional relationships with staff of the Department of Child Safety, Youth and Women.
Duties & ResponsibilitiesCase ManagementPrepare for the initial engagement with families by reading the referral and carefully considering what resources may be requiredRespectfully engage families by adopting appropriate cultural protocolsExplore existing family supports and kinship relationshipsEnsure the perspectives of children and young people are valued and consideredIdentify family strengths and stakeholdersEnsure families are aware of the department's immediate safety concerns, including the concerns that are not negotiableDevelop and document safety plans with familiesAssess all forms of risk and protective factors for preschool and aged childrenPrepare families for planning meetings with the departmentComplete referrals, in consultation with familiesProvide culturally appropriate FLDM support to families across all points along the child protection continuum (e.g., safety planning, court processes, reunification, transitioning to independence, etc.)Facilitate the engagement between families and the department across the child protection continuumFacilitation of Family Group meetingsPrepare families for the FGM processEnsure that all of the information is available to familiesFacilitate a safe environment for families to engageAdministrationRecord case notes of all work undertaken with families in the required timeframeConduct regular reviews of all plansNetworking and PartnershipsWork collaboratively with the Family Wellbeing ServiceEffectively engage with other service providersEffectively engage with traditional owners, elders, and families across all communitiesRequired Qualifications and ExperienceQualification relevant to position (i.e., Certification IV Child, Youth and Family Intervention)Ability to use MS Office suiteExperience in working with client information systems (experience in using ARC desirable)Working understanding of FLDM model and adopting strengths-based practiceAbility to work within the QATSCIPP practice framework and standardsKnowledge of or the ability to acquire knowledge of the relevant government statutes governing statutory child protection work (i.e., Child Protection Act 1999) and the ability to keep current of the legislative, practice, and procedural changes within the systemAbility to demonstrate strong capabilities around building relationships with and motivating vulnerable people, assessing needs, and advocating for the clientAbility to work with vulnerable young people and their familiesUnderstanding of the historical, social, cultural, and economic issues affecting the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and young people todayHighly developed communication skills with the ability to liaise, consult, and negotiate positive outcomes in collaboration with clients, internal and external stakeholders.THIS IS AN IDENTIFIED POSITION FOR ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER PEOPLE Why work for TAIHSTAIHS provides access to an employee assistance program and access to learning and development opportunities.
